The seat fell vacant after Fathima Thahiliya, the incumbent councillor belonging to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), resigned from her post following her victory in the 2026 Assembly election from the Perambra constituency in the district. Ms. Thahiliya had won the Corporation election by a majority of over 2,000 votes.
The UDF and the IUML have now nominated social worker Farseena Arakkal as its candidate. She submitted her nomination papers on Wednesday (September 9, 2026). Meanwhile, it is learnt that some objections were raised by functionaries of the Vanitha League, the women’s wing of the IUML, because none of its activists were considered for the candidature. A consensus was reportedly reached after senior leader M.K. Muneer held talks with stakeholders. Meanwhile, the LDF has proposed T.T. Jamsheena of the Indian National League as its candidate.
