A sideline discussion between cornerback ongoing contract tensions. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported on The Pat McAfee Show that there is still hope for a last-minute extension before the kick off their regular-season opener against Atlanta.

Despite this optimism about the negotiations, head coach continues to offer vague updates on the 26-year-old lockdown defender’s readiness for game day. With the opening kickoff approaching, reporters in Pittsburgh have been pressing the first-year Steelers coach daily for clarity on whether Porter will play against the Falcons. Unfortunately, each press briefing has yielded nearly identical, noncommittal responses.

According to ESPN Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor, McCarthy : “Mike McCarthy says Joey Porter Jr.’s participation will again be a ‘ramp-up’ type day at Wednesday’s practice.” Instead of confirming full team reps or committing to a specific workload for Week 1, McCarthy has consistently relied on the ambiguous “ramp-up” label to describe Porter’s daily activities without offering any concrete information about his physical condition.

This cautious approach mirrors with his teammates. When asked about the cornerback’s progress, McCarthy offered broad statements that revealed little: “He’s doing a good job; he’s going through the ramp-up process. We’re going to do a little bit more with him today. This is the first time he’s been able to put the pads on. We’re staying true to that process of being smart and trying not to go too fast.”

With Pittsburgh facing a strict deadline for in-season negotiations and McCarthy refusing to provide any clear answers, Steelers fans are left wondering if Porter’s ongoing “ramp-up” will actually lead to his participation on the field this Sunday.
