In addition to the Game of the Week between Lake Travis and Steele, there are several other notable games in the San Antonio area this week, including an unlikely matchup between a pair of 2-0 teams.
LEE vs. MacArthur, 7 p.m. Thursday, Heroes Stadium: It's probably too early to deem them turnaround teams, but there is something decidedly optimistic about the early fortunes of LEE and MacArthur, both 2-0. Consider this, LEE had won 13 games since 2015 and MacArthur had seven wins since 2018 prior to the season. LEE has posted big wins against Edison (50-19) and Kyle Lehman (33-7) under first year coach Eddie Veyran, who previously served as offensive coordinator at Cole. The Volunteers average 330.5 rushing yards with Tahrie Chandler leading the way with 226 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries. After going winless in coach Jordon Ricker's first season at his alma mater last year, the Brahmas have wins against Burbank (32-10) and Holmes (27-21).
Brackenridge vs. Sam Houston, 7 p.m. Thursday, SAISD Complex: At 2-0, Brackenridge has equaled the number of victories it had during the previous three years, which included winless seasons in 2023 and 2024. Second year coach Steve Garcia has the Eagles moving in the right direction with victories against Kennedy (13-7) and Poteet (45-27). Thursday's District 14-5A-II opener against reigning league champion Sam Houston is a big test. The Hurricanes (1-1) picked up their first victory under new coach Rashard Colquitt, 54-13, against Kennedy last week. That came a week after dropping a tough battle against Region IV power Austin LBJ, 42-33.
Boerne at Davenport, 7 p.m. Friday: This is a powerhouse matchup featuring a pair of Region IV's top teams. Boerne (2-0), listed No. 5 in the area by the Express-News and No. 2 in the Class 5A Division Il state rankings, has a pair of wins against 6A opponents Round Rock Westwood (34-14) and Laredo United (41-34). Senior quarterback has passed for 485 yards, rushed for 141 yards and combined for eight touchdowns. Davenport, the area's No. 9 team and No. 4 in the 4A Division I state rankings, has never been afraid to punch up against competition in larger classifications. They have wins against New Braunfels Long Creek (37-26) and Leander Glenn (58-20). Junior quarterback Tristan Torrez has settled in second season as the starter with 427 yards and three touchdowns.
Odessa vs. Johnson, 7 p.m. Friday: Heroes Stadium: Johnson (1-0) returns to Heroes Stadium for the first time since its season-opener against Judson was canceled in the middle of the second quarter because of a storm that knocked out the stadium's power. That didn't deter the Jaguars, ranked No. 1 by the Express-News and No. 6 in the Class 6A state rankings, as they rolled over previously state-ranked Austin Vandegrift, 38-7. Odessa (2-0) has doubled the number of victories they had last year after wins against Mexico City Prep (51-14) and El Paso Coronado (19-11).
Brennan vs. Taft: 7 p.m. Saturday, Farris Stadium: Taft (2-0), ranked No. 15 by the Express-News, appears to have figured out its quarterback situation by playing junior Jacoby Nelson and freshman Diego Garcia, who have combined for 381 yards and four touchdowns on 31-of-46 passing. They are getting thrown into the deep end to start District 29-6A play against No. 4 Brennan (1-1) and tackle machine, junior linebacker, Johnas Brewster, who had 42 tackles in two games. He had 181 last season.
