Universities must move beyond preparing students for existing employment opportunities and equip them with skills to meet the rapidly changing demands of the future, MP for Kalaburagi Radhakrishna Doddamani said on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering at the 47th foundation day celebration of Gulbarga University here, Mr. Doddamani said artificial intelligence, digital technologies, biotechnology, climate change and changing employment patterns were transforming the nature of work and the skills required by young people.

“Today, the question before us is not how far the university has travelled, but how far it can go from here,” he said, calling for greater emphasis on innovation, research, critical thinking, adaptability and social responsibility.

He said Gulbarga University had a particularly important role to play in Kalyana Karnataka, where higher education institutions must remain closely connected to the aspirations and developmental needs of the region.

“The constitutional recognition accorded to Kalyana Karnataka under Article 371 (J) underlines the importance of creating greater educational and developmental opportunities for its people,” he said.

Congratulating the graduating students, Mr. Doddamani urged them to view their degrees not merely as qualifications for employment but as a responsibility to contribute to society.

“You are not simply students of this university; you are future ambassadors of this institution. Your success should not be measured only by the position you eventually occupy, but by the difference you make in the lives of others,” he said.

Highlighting the university’s recent academic achievements, Mr. Doddamani said they were encouraging indicators of its progress.

Gulbarga University has secured a B+ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), is ranked in the 200+ category in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), and has received a 4-star rating from ICARE under the Karnataka State Universities Rating Framework (KSURF) of the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC).

The university has also secured a 601-650 ranking in the QS rankings.

Mr. Doddamani said the foundation day celebration was not merely an occasion to mark the institution’s journey but also an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to academic excellence, research, innovation and the development of the region.

He expressed hope that Gulbarga University would emerge as an even stronger centre of excellence, research and innovation for the Kalyana Karnataka region.
