In an order issued by KSHRC chairperson Alexander Thomas, the Chief Secretary was instructed to take immediate steps to sanction the maximum eligible aid from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) if compensation has not yet been disbursed to the affected families.
The incident occurred on October 1, 2025, when three workers from Tamil Nadu — Jayaraman, Michael, and Sundarapandian — got trapped and died inside the sewage treatment plant of the hotel.
The commission stated that the Idukki Collector, coordinating with the District Labour Officer, must identify the authority responsible for awarding compensation under the Employee’s Compensation Act, which covers losses suffered by dependents due to workplace fatalities. The order further directed the Collector to provide legal aid to the deceased’s legal heirs to help them secure compensation.
Petitions had been filed before the commission by New Delhi-based Safai Karmachari and Madurai-based Shreshta, demanding compensation for the victims’ families. Although the petitioners failed to appear or submit replies, the criminal case remains pending. The complainants are not direct dependents of the deceased, Mr. Thomas noted, adding that the commission had taken up the matter in public interest.
