One post carried perhaps the most powerful reminder of all.âLeave the game better than you found it. And when it comes time for you to leave, leave a legend.âThe Lakers paired Bryantâs words with an image of his statue outside Crypto.com Arena, letting the quote do most of the work.
For Lakers fans, the timing adds another layer. Bryantâs Aug. 23 birthday arrives one day before Aug. 24 â 8/24 â a date synonymous with the two jersey numbers he wore during his 20 seasons in Los Angeles.
Lakers Turn Kobe Bryantâs Birthday Into a Day-Long Tribute
The Lakers did not limit their remembrance to one obligatory birthday post.Another post read â81 for No. 8â and included video from Bryantâs most famous game , a nod to the number he wore during the first half of his career.
Later came another piece built specifically for fans: âMamba on the lockscreen,â accompanied by Bryant-themed phone wallpapers. One of them again featured the same message about leaving the game as a legend.Taken together, the posts traced several versions of Bryant that Lakers fans still remember: the young No. 8, the championship star, the elder statesman and the figure whose words became almost as enduring as his highlights.That distinction matters on Bryantâs birthday.
His résumé hardly needs embellishment. Bryant played his entire 20-year NBA career with the Lakers, won five championships, earned 18 All-Star selections and scored 33,643 points. He was the 2008 NBA MVP and twice won NBA Finals MVP.
But the Lakersâ tribute focused less on reciting those accomplishments than on the permanence of his relationship with the franchise.

Kobe Bryantâs Birthday Leads Directly Into 8/24
Bryant was born on August 23, 1978, according to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.That makes his birthday the opening half of an especially emotional stretch for Lakers fans. August 24 has become associated with Bryant because he wore Nos. 8 and 24 during his Lakers career, creating an annual 8/24 remembrance immediately after his birthday.
The basketball world has continued that tradition in 2026. Former Lakers and other NBA figures also posted birthday messages for Bryant as his 48th birthday was remembered across the sport.
His family marked the day as well. Vanessa Bryant posted a throwback picture with her husband and wrote, âHappy birthday, baby. I love you so much.â
Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. Kobe was 41.
More than six years later, the Lakers no longer need many words to explain what he means to the organization.
On his 48th birthday, they chose some of his own.
