When last season ended, Nicolas Gonzalez made it clear that after his loan spell at Atletico Madrid, while the Spanish side were keen to bring him back.

Gonzalez enjoyed a fine spell in Spain, but he did not do enough to earn an automatic permanent move to the Wanda Metropolitano. As a result, Juventus had to negotiate with Atletico over a potential transfer.

Atletico made an offer, but it was nowhere near the amount Juventus wanted before allowing Gonzalez to leave. The Spanish side did not return with an improved proposal, leaving the negotiations at a standstill.

Gonzalez stuck at Juventus

Atletico eventually gave up on the deal, leaving Gonzalez in Turin and hoping the transfer could still be revived. However, that never happened, as from the Bianconeri.

Gonzalez had therefore been expected to leave Juventus, or at least play a limited role for the club this season. However, circumstances have changed significantly since then, particularly because of injuries affecting several of their key players.

The situation has opened the door for Gonzalez to become an important member of Luciano Spalletti’s squad. He has taken advantage of the opportunity and is now playing a much more significant role than many expected at the start of the campaign.Image from article: Juventus could offer a new deal to a player they wanted to sell in the summer(Photo by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images)

Juventus considering Gonzalez extension

According to , Juventus are even considering extending Gonzalez’s current contract, which expires in the summer of 2029. The Bianconeri now believe the attacker can still play an important role for the team.

That represents a major change from the situation at the end of last season. Gonzalez appeared determined to leave, Atletico wanted him back, and Juventus were seemingly prepared to let him go if the right offer arrived.

Now, the club are looking at the possibility of keeping him for even longer. His current importance to Spalletti’s team has changed the perception of his future, while his performances have given Juventus another reason to trust him.

It will be interesting to see whether Gonzalez agrees to extend his stay in Turin. After appearing to have no future at the club, he now has an opportunity to become an important part of Juventus’ plans for the coming years.
