Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans recently got some upsetting news... again.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Fans Heartbroken Over Latest Cancellation

Nicholas Becher is a gaming journalist with an MFA in Creative Writing from FAU. With extensive experience playing video games, he covers all forms of gaming content at Screen Rant, from breaking news to the latest fan theories. Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond.

According to a series of recent posts on , developers at Deck Nine Games were apparently working on a Buffy the Vampire Slayer game before the project was quietly cancelled, according to new claims attributed to a former employee. Reddit user LadyDevHeart previously claimed Deck Nine had spent years searching for additional projects while developing Life is Strange: Double Exposure and its follow-up, with the studio reportedly struggling financially behind the scenes.

"For years they have been desperate for other projects in order to pay for the operations of the studio," LadyDevHeart reportedly claimed, adding that Deck Nine had several games in pre-production, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Walking Dead, Conan the Barbarian, and briefly The Wolf Among Us 2.

According to the post, "all of these were cancelled. " A separate former Deck Nine developer's portfolio reportedly references a cancelled "vampire game," although there is currently no confirmation that this was the same Buffy project.

LadyDevHeart paints a particularly messy picture of Deck Nine during this period, alleging "frequent mis-scoping, crunch, chaotic scheduling, and bullying" during Double Exposure. They claim interviews with more than 10 former employees repeatedly highlighted problems involving studio management, production, the narrative team, and Square Enix's oversight. That said, these allegations have not been independently verified.

Unsurprisingly, Buffy fans are disappointed. summed up the feeling with, "Us Buffy fans just can't catch a break," while called a new Buffy game "a dream come true. " instead asked for remasters of the two older games, while argued that "a [Life is Strange-style] Buffy game would be really smart. "

Others were actually relieved, with saying Deck Nine's failures and disastrous internal issues meant the cancellation was "probably for the better," and similarly argued the studio "would've butchered Buffy like crazy. "

Overall, while the Buffy game has never been officially confirmed, the cancellation shouldn't come as a huge blow to longtime fans. The fact that yet another Buffy project has been staked in the heart before it ever saw the light of day suggests the franchise might officially be cursed, and a proper reboot seems more and more unlikely with each new cancellation.
