Bishop Moore, the Class 2A boys golf state champs last fall, is picking up where it left off with strong showings this season. The Hornets rallied with a 9-under-par 279 second day score to win last weekend’s Titan Invitational, hosted by Olympia High at Hammock Beach Resorts — The Conservatory Course. Jack Mokris, a junior, led the Hornets with a scalding 63 Saturday score after shooting 69 on Friday. The 9-under 63 set a school record. The Hornets shot 286 on Friday and trailed Ponte Vedra (279) and Circle Christian (282) going into Saturday. Bishop Moore totaled 565 to top Ponte Vedra’s 570. Circle Christian finished fourth with a 282-297—579 score. Lake Mary was sixth at 303-293—596, and Winter Park seventh at 294-307—601. Mokris was the medalist with his 132 total ahead of Circle’s Ryker Huther, who shot 66-72—138. Bishop Moore newcomer Jiheon Oh, a junior, was third at 72-67—139. “It was a pleasant surprise when our admissions director told me Jiheon moved in from Wesley Chapel,” Snyder said. “We played against him in Class 2A.” Bishop Moore plays The First Academy, last season’s 1A state runner-up, in an 18-hole match at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Orange Tree Golf Club. Those teams will also be part of the Central Florida Prep Invitational on Sept. 9 at the Country Club of Orlando. Others signed up for that event include perennial powers Benjamin of Palm Beach and Ponte Vedra, Lake Highland Prep and Winter Park. Lake Highland totaled 4-under 140 to top Winter Park (142) and Trinity Prep (161) to win the inaugural Fox Squirrel Cup match at Rio Pinar Country Club, the home course for all three teams. Christian Koehn shot 3-under 33 to lead the Highlanders. Winter Park’s Lawson Hovey earned medalist honors with a round of 32. The match was shortened from 18 holes to nine due to weather. Anthony Primo scored a 3-under 33 at Eagle Creek Golf Club for Lake Nona in a 150-156 win against Harmony. Windermere Prep and tied at 150 in a match at Orange Tree. Chase Bauer shot 2-under-par 34 for the Lakers. Trinity Prep’s Luke Kang shot a 69 in the Bishop McLaughlin Hurricane Invitational at Seven Springs Golf & Country Club in New Port Richey. Football flexing DeLand’s ability to hang with a St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) a top-0three national team, wasn’t the only Week 2 game that showed off Sunshine State talent and toughness. DeLand was tied 35-35 at home with 10 minutes remaining before the Panthers escaped with a 49-35 victory. Miami Columbus, which was outside the MaxPreps national Top 25, scored a stunning 33-28 win against No. 1 ranked Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas in the Broward County National Football Showcase. In the same multi-game event, No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale overpowered Texas state champ DeSoto 38-14. The Raiders, winners of seven consecutive FHSAA championships, turned the running clock on with a 38-0 halftime lead. And are you ready for this? Aquinas (2-0), now No. 1 in the country, hosts Columbus (2-0), now No. 6, on Friday night. Volleyball Oviedo, off to a 5-0 start after winning a 6A state title last year, is in Honolulu participating in the three-day Hawaii Island Labor Day Classic. The Lions are the only Florida squad in a field that includes teams from Alaska, California, Oregon and Texas. Oviedo is coming off an impressive 25-21, 25-15, 25-20 win against Lake Brantley, which was 3-0. Nationally ranked Orangewood Christian (4-0) is home Thursday to play Bishop Moore (3-0). Next week, the Rams go to Gainesville to play a Wednesday match against Ocala Trinity Catholic (3-1) at the University of Florida’s O’Connell Center. That 6 p.m. match is the front end of a doubleheader that includes the Gators taking on Miami in an 8 p.m. college match. Ellie Enger had 14 kills, nine assists and three blocks for Orangewood in a 3-0 win against West Orange (4-1). Kaleigh Langmo added 10 kills, nine digs and two aces. Bishop Moore topped Trinity Catholic 3-1 on Tuesday. Kohen Kazmierczak stuffed the stat sheet with 26 assists, 13 digs, six kills and three blocks as DeLand (5-0) rolled to a 25-14, 25-18, 25-20 win against Timber Creek. Sanford Seminole (2-2) scored its first win against Hagerty (1-1) since 2013 in a five-set nail-biter, 25-15, 18-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11. Sophomores Lia Hufford (20 kills, 14 digs) and McKaylah Mattis (15 assists, 10 digs, five blocks) led the ‘Noles. Seminole’s losses are to Oviedo and Lake Brantley. Ellie Rodriguez had 23 kills and Jordyn Lehman had 33 digs for Winter Park in a 25-22, 18-25, 28-26, 25-16 win against Lake Highland (3-1). But the Wildcats (3-1) were outscored Tuesday at Montverde (3-1) by scores of 16-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9. Kristina Vargas posted a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs for Montverde. Lake Nona (5-0) senior Angeli Aguilar had 16 kills and 14 digs and the Lions dealt St .Cloud (5-1) its first loss Tuesday, 3-0. Nona is home vs. Winter Park Thursday night. Nova Lakes, the new Osceola County school, scored its first volleyball win in its third match of the year against International Community 25-22, 26-24, 25-21. Bowling Winter Park’s boys fell behind early in its season opener but rallied to top Jones 2,768 pins to 2,398. Evan Coomes had a 269 game for the Wildcats. Adrian Jones bowled a 247 for Jones. The Winter Park girls also won with 2,363 total. Eden Bastian bowled a 195 in that win. Jonathan Vinson-McFarland rolled a 449 two-game series with a 267 for Lyman (4-0) as the Greyhounds topped Hagerty (3-1) by scores of 2,659 to 2,510. Aaden Bristol added a 255 in the victory. Jonathan Madruga had a 248 game and 450 series for the Huskies. Oviedo’s Nathan Miller bowled a 262 in a win. In girls play, Page Arnold rolled 210 for Lake Mary (3-0) in a win against Crooms (3-1). Chase Ornelas had a 203 for the Panthers (3-1). Cross country Hagerty dominated the girls and boys Trinity Prep Invitational races. Oviedo senior Levi Mollica was the individual boys champ with a 16:42.44 effort, followed by Hagerty’s Nate Winslow (17:01.86), Camden Thompson (17:06.34), Reid Henson (17:19.35) and Wesley Lizon (17:30.91). Hagerty’s girls won with 19 points, led by runner-up Madison Thompson’s 20:58.45. Rachel Judy of The Master’s Academy was first in Rachel Judy 20:40.07. Tavares junior Liam Ilea ran a personal record 16:00.6 for second at the Whispering Pines meet in Inverness. St. Cloud senior Luis Rivera was first at Osceola’s Kowboy Invitational with a personal record 16:04.54. City of Life Christian’s girls won the Wildwood Invitational.
