2026 HS Football Preview: Riverton Rams

RIVERTON, KS. — Riverton High School Football enters year five under Head Coach Danny Weaver this fall, aiming to record the program's first winning season since 2021. Riverton finished 5-5 overall in 2025 featuring a strong finish; the Rams began the year 0-3 before a 5-2 finish including a playoff win over Cherryvale. " We definitely want to get our wins up," senior Grady Thomas said. " We we didn't finish how we wanted to last year, but this year we're going for more. "

Riverton has a combined record of 15-15 overall across the previous three seasons and will lean on a senior class that features a pair of names that were often associated with scoring touchdowns last campaign. Aydin Witherspoon and Noah Parker are both back in the blue and gold for one final go. Witherspoon is a dynamic athlete that can play practically any skill position on the field, though his talents were primarily utilized under center throughout the second half of the season last year.

Parker returns at running back, also serving as the Rams' leading tackler from last campaign, holding down the linebacker core. Even with 19 total returning starters, Weaver said his group could feature an array of freshman in the starting group depending on how things shake out ahead of kickoff. " We've got a really big freshman class also," Weaver said. " It's loaded with linemen. I can see us having a couple of freshman linemen that will start. "

One thing in particular the Rams are focused on this go around is a strong start. Dating back to 2022, Riverton holds combined record of 2-10 overall when looking at only the first three weeks of the regular season. " It's always started off with the first couple of losses, and then we start getting the groove of things like halfway through the season," Witherspoon said. " So definitely starting off stronger. " The task ahead won't be an easy one, though.

Weaver said the Rams' schedule is far from easy in 2026. " I can guarantee you that every every team that we play has a very good quality ball club," Weaver said. " Our conference is always really good. It's going to be good every year. Our districts really, really good. So there's no off nights, but there's not a game on the schedule that I can sit down and look at and go, man, I'm worried. I feel confident that our guys are going to go out and compete. "
