Yorktown sweeps Delaware County Cross Country Championships for third-straight year

The Tigers faced stiff competition from a very solid Wapahani group that claimed a second-place finish on the girls side for the third year in a row. Senior Ava Cook led the way with a third-place time of 20:44.09, and the Lady Raiders matched Yorktown's four all-county performers with junior Ella Taylor (21:47.08) in fifth place and sophomores Audrey Bragg (22:32.17) and Cambry Carpenter (22:42.08) in eighth and ninth, respectively. It marked Cook's third all-county medal in her career and Taylor's second.

"It's a lot of mental preparation for me, and I've also got to get the rest of my team ready as well," Cook said. "We train a lot in the heat just to be prepared for meets like this, so it was a lot of preparation for the whole team. "

Meanwhile, Delta claimed a much-more distant second place team score in the boys race. The Eagles saw seniors Peyton Engle and Nolan Hutchison claim all-county spots — Engle (16:51.82) finished fifth to claim his third career medal, while Hutchison (17:36.19) claimed his second with a 10th-place finish. Engle also took pride in denying Yorktown a full top-five sweep.

"I was going into this race knowing it probably wasn't going to be my best, just racing three days earlier," Engle said. "It was my main goal just to solidify that fifth place, honestly, and use it to break Yorktown's perfect score. I saw their fifth guy coming down the stretch, he passed me with about 150 meters left, and I had to give him my all. "
