NEW YORK– It may have been fair to assume that had already received his final chance to impact the 2026 when he last played on August 1st against the Chicago Cubs.
But as the former first-round pick rounded the bases after mashing a seventh-inning grand slam in New York’s 10-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night, it was hard to ignore what seemed like a renewed sense of determination.
When all was said and done, manager was sure to praise Volpe for making a splash in his first game back in the Bronx.

“He loves the game. He loves this team. He loves competing with them,” Boone said. “I think he’s a ball player. He keeps it pretty simple in that regard. He went down there, worked his tail off, played really well, and has come up here. He’s close to so many of these guys. So he’s just happy to be back in the grind and in the fight with them.”
The home run was Volpe’s second of the season and part of a 3-for-4 night that saw him tally a career-high five RBIs. Following George Lombard Jr.’s grand slam on Wednesday evening, Volpe’s long ball marked the first time in franchise history that two players under the age of 25 have hit grand slams in consecutive days.
The New York native was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead of Thursday’s series finale after everyday second baseman with a sprained right thumb.
Volpe, a shortstop by trade, made his first career start
“I thought I was never going to be back up here,” Volpe said. “So I’m trying to make the most of it.”
In addition to Volpe’s production, the Bombers also from Spencer Jones and Luis Garcia Jr. The former went 3-for-4 and tallied two RBIs while the latter went 1-for-5 and launched his 30th home run of the campaign.
Max Fried struck out seven batters across 3.1 innings before a combination of Michael Fulmer, John Schreiber, Ryan Yarbrough, Brent Headrick, and Luis Gil got the Pinstripes across the finish line.
The Yankees’ latest win marked their third victory in a row and cemented a series sweep over the Rockies. They are now three games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings and will open a three-game set with the crosstown New York Mets on Friday night.
