The New York Yankees thought they were getting a major boost to their rotation with the upcoming return of Carlos Rodón. Instead, the team was hit with some difficult news involving another.

The New York Yankees thought they were getting a major boost to their rotation with the upcoming return of Carlos Rodón. Instead, the team was hit with some difficult news involving another one of its most important starters, and it comes at the most crucial time of the MLB season. The Yankees have placed Max Fried back on the 15-day injured list with a bone bruise in his elbow, creating another concern for a rotation that has been one of the team’s biggest strengths all season. MORE: MLB catcher Jake Rogers breaks a 122-year-old record Fried Back on the injured list Oct 5, 2025; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone (17) relieves pitcher Max Fried (54) in the fourth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays during game two of the ALDS round for the 2025 MLB playoffs at Rogers Centre. Mandatory Credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images The Yankees backdated Fried’s IL placement to August 14, giving the club the maximum three days allowed. Unfortunately, this is a familiar injury for Fried. The left-hander was previously sidelined in the middle of May because of a bone bruise in his elbow, and that absence ultimately lasted two months. The Yankees have not indicated whether this latest issue is as serious as the previous one. With the team off Monday, manager Aaron Boone should have an opportunity to provide additional information when he speaks with reporters Tuesday. The timing is particularly frustrating because Fried had been pitching extremely well since returning from his previous injury. He has made five starts since the first IL stint and posted a 1.82 ERA while striking out nearly 32% of the batters he has faced. MORE: MLB awards predictions for the 2026 season Rodón returns, but rotation takes another hit May 21, 2026; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon (55) pitches in the first inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images The good news is that the Yankees are getting Carlos Rodón back. New York is expected to activate Rodón from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, with the left-hander scheduled to start against Shane Baz in the opener of a three-game series at Camden Yards. That return becomes even more important with Fried heading back to the IL. The Yankees have relied heavily on their pitching staff to remain in playoff position while dealing with offensive struggles, particularly during the absence of Aaron Judge. Their rotation has been the best in baseball by ERA, sitting at 3.38 for the season. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees’ rotation has been even better, allowing just 2.69 earned runs per nine innings. That’s why Fried’s latest injury is such a concern. The Yankees are getting Rodón back, but losing Fried could significantly change the outlook of a rotation that has carried them throughout the 2026 season. — Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
