Wyndham Clark won the BMW Championship on Sunday, but he certainly wasn’t the fan favorite when playing in the final group alongside Rory McIlroy.

Clark actually played really poorly during the final round at Bellerive, right up until he birdied his final three holes to win by three strokes.

The 32-year-old American is now a six-time PGA Tour winner and he is leading the Player of the Year race.

Wyndham Clark suggests why fans jeered him during the final round of the BMW

The 32-year-old addressed the media in St. Louis, Missouri, on Sunday after his impressive victory at Bellerive.

Clark responded when asked about some fans cheering when he made mistakes and jeering him when he hit good shots.

Yeah, the first three days I didn’t feel any of that,“ Clark admitted.

“I played with Gary yesterday. Gary being close to here, they were really cheering for him. But I felt equally as much love.

“And then today, yeah, I think there’s two things: They wanted Rory. And then, if you bet on Rory, he had better, you know, you get better return on your money. So I think that’s some things that happened in golf where guys, I think some of the rooting against is because of the betting.

“But, yeah, I mean, even with that they still treated me great. And I just think, I mean, Rory’s earned the right to be a fan favorite. So, you know, I embraced it. I’ve kind of been the underdog in all of my wins, and I’ve just accepted that and enjoy that moment.“

Clark made his bed back in 2025 with some really poor behavior both on and off the golf course, and now he has to lie in it.

Of course, abusing players while they are competing is not okay.

However, Clark has to accept that the treatment he regularly receives is the consequence of smashing up lockers at Oakmont and hurling his driver into advertising boards at Quail Hollow last year.

He may as well embrace the villain character, because fighting against it will be exhausting.

If Clark continues to win regularly, I don’t suppose he will actually care what golf fans think of him anyway.
