On Wednesday, ESPN’s Katie Barnes reported that a WNBA task force discussed, among other issues, the question of transgender athletes’ participation in the league. After the task force meeting concluded, the WNBA released a statement claiming that “there are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA.”
This part of the league’s statement did not sit well with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who tweeted his disappointment with the WNBA on Thursday.
“Women’s sports league cannot define what a woman is. SMH.”
The varying interpretations of the WNBA’s eligibility guidelines have led former NBA players like Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White to “declare” for the 2027 WNBA draft. Based on the messaging from Freedom and Royce over the past week, their posts have called attention to the lack of clarity around the league’s eligibility rules.
Freedom, whose efforts as an activist have defined his legacy after he wrapped up his NBA career, has gone so far as to post his letter of “declaration” in a viral clip.
“Officially official, @WNBA. I have officially declared for the 2027 #WNBA Draft. Rules are rules! #LetFreedomPlay”
Notably, in this clip, Freedom wore a statement shirt that read“Invest in women. Pay women. Hire women.”
It’s evident, however, that the likes of Freedom, White, and now DeSantis are waiting on the WNBA to provide a more substantial definition of “women” in their eligibility guidelines.

Another pundit who slammed the WNBA for the outcome of their task force meeting was OutKick’s Ian Miller.
