Solid defense and a phenomenal performance by running back Nasir Conrad helped the visiting Walkertown Wolfpack varsity football team claim a 22-14 win over Parkland on Friday night.
The Wolfpack struggled offensively in the first half, Head Coach Tripp Honeycutt said.
“Parkland is very much improved and defensively they did some things to try and confuse us for a while. They have a 6-6, 220-pound quarterback who is a sophomore and he is good,” he said “We lost Camereon Cartlidge to graduation after last season, and he was the two-time conference defensive player of the year. But our defense has played wonderful in the first two games. I think the biggest thing is not having one player try to make up for Camereon being gone because he was making 15 to 18 tackles a game. We try to do it by committee and we have a bunch of older guys on defense that have played a ton of football.”
Conrad finished the game with 305 yards rushing on 31 carries and scored one touchdown.
“Nasir is a senior and our offense kind of runs through him, He also caught five passes in our two games. I was surprised he only had one touchdown run. It was an impressive thing to watch on Friday. He had one carry to their one-yard line and he came out and we scored on the next play. We are still trying to get our passing game going. Our quarterback, Kai Tart, is a senior but he is new to the team. He is still learning but he is a fast learner,” Honeycutt said.
Tart completed nine of 16 passes for 49 yards. Ja’Keis Vernon caught one touchdown pass and three passes for 34 yards.
Walkertown (2-0) will host West Rowan (1-1) on Friday night at 7 p.m. If the heat index is at or over 90 degrees at kickoff time the game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
