Diana Taurasi is considered by many to be the WNBA GOAT, and she has now revealed her ambition to become a team owner.

The name Diana Taurasi is synonymous with greatness when it comes to basketball. The California native dominated the WNBA for years.

She is also a heroic American athlete, having won six Olympic gold medals with the US women’s national basketball team. This makes her the most decorated player in any Olympic team sport in US history.

Taurasi played for 20 years in the WNBA, all with one team, the Phoenix Mercury. She enjoyed immense success with them, claiming three championships. And now, she wants the relationship to acquire a new flavour.

Diana Taurasi says owning a stake in Phoenix Mercury is a ‘goal’

WNBA franchises are growing in valuation at a truly absurd rate. Based on data between 2023 and 2026, the average value of a franchise has gone from $96 million to $427 million.

With that in mind, many savvy businessmen are trying to get in as the league’s fortunes continue to soar. And Taurasi, who was crucial to building the W up to where it is now, wants a piece too.

“Ownership is always something that’s always been on my mind,” Taurasi told ESPN after a court-naming dedication in Phoenix. “So, thankfully, I’m in a great place where it hopefully can evolve into something.

“But, I don’t want to just do it and not be around. When I do it, I want to be around because I want to have an influence on where this franchise goes. And obviously being in Phoenix would be the goal.”

Taurasi’s No. 3 is about to be retired in Phoenix and sent into the rafters. While she has earned that honour and then some, one could argue she has earned the right to become an owner with the team, too.
