OXNARD, Calif. — The Cowboys added a future Hall of Fame pass rusher in Von Miller on Sunday. That won’t keep them from adding more in the future, however.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones piqued the interest of many when he said at the opening news conference of training camp that he would be open to a “substantive” trade for a defensive playmaker. He said he would be willing to steal from the future to add to the present team because he believed they could make a run this year.

With training camp winding down, Jones hasn’t changed that interest. In fact, he insinuated he could be more inclined.

“Yes,” he said. “If we had an opportunity, I would be.

“It’s as much about what I think of where we are, which I’m more positive than when we started camp — seriously — about what our chances are. And so I think if we saw an opportunity to take a little of the future and put it on this team, I’d do it if it would help us.”

The Cowboys still have some assets to make that happen. They already dealt one of their 2027 first-round picks to the New York Jets in the trade that landed them defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. That pick will be the better of their two first-round picks. They could trade their other first-round pick, as long as the other team agrees to accept the worse of their two first-round picks. They also have their second- and third-round picks in 2027.

There’s an owners' meeting in Atlanta later in August, but Jones said that shouldn’t be looked at as a place for him to talk trades with other teams.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer also said the team would be open to making additions. He said he’s hoping some of the younger players on the roster also develop.

Still, he said he likes the roster. Jones agrees.

“I’m even more excited today than I was when we started camp that our team is going to be one that if we can have some things go right for us, avoid some injury, we could really be something that we all want to be,” he said. “And that’s a team that’s competing for the big games. So bottom line is the answer is yes: if we saw something that would help us any place, we’d do it.”
