Liverpool injury update: Barcola boost as Iraola waits on fitness for Fulham
Liverpool’s preparations for Fulham come with encouragement over Bradley Barcola, uncertainty surrounding Cody Gakpo and a reminder that Hugo Ekitike’s recovery remains a longer journey.
Andoni Iraola’s latest injury update offers three different pictures of availability. Barcola is expected to be ready if his final training session passes without complications. Gakpo still has something to prove on the training pitch. For Ekitike, the discussion concerns a possible European return further down the line.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the original source of the update, Iraola outlined the position before Liverpool complete their preparations. His comments offered reassurance, but stopped short of declaring every decision settled.
Barcola injury update brings encouragement before Fulham
For Barcola, the message was straightforward: the problem was cramp. That distinction will be welcome for Liverpool as they assess their options for Fulham, although Iraola made clear that another training session must come first.
“We still need to train this afternoon but Barcola was just cramps. We have to evaluate but there’s no injury he should be available if everything goes normal.”
The expectation is availability, rather than a guaranteed starting place. Iraola’s assessment concerns whether Barcola can be considered for selection; it does not establish how many minutes he will play or what role he will take.
That leaves a familiar final step in match preparation. Liverpool need to see how he comes through training before turning an encouraging medical assessment into a selection decision.
Cody Gakpo faces decisive training assessment
Gakpo’s situation is less certain. Iraola has left open the possibility of involvement against Fulham, but the next training session will determine whether that is realistic.
“Cody we will see. Today we will try with him and let’s see if he’s ready for tomorrow or we have to wait until the next one.”
There is no firm commitment in those words. Equally, there is no confirmation that Gakpo will miss out. Liverpool are still gathering the information needed to decide.
For Iraola, that uncertainty matters when considering his attacking options. Having a player available expands the choices from the start and from the bench. Until Gakpo has been assessed, however, his participation remains a possibility rather than something Liverpool can count on.
Hugo Ekitike return remains some distance away
Ekitike’s outlook requires a different perspective. The immediate fixture is outside the timeframe Iraola described, with attention instead turning towards the closing matches of the opening European stage.
“Hugo, it’s difficult with long-term injuries. It’s still far. We had a meeting with all the medical department to analyse and complete the list of European games and there’s a chance he could play in the last two games of the opening stage but it’s too early to say. We have put him there as there’s a hope and a realistic chance he could play.”
His inclusion reflects a possibility discussed with the medical department. It does not amount to a confirmed return date.
Iraola’s language leaves room for optimism while acknowledging how much remains unresolved. Liverpool have allowed for Ekitike’s potential involvement, with his recovery still determining whether that opportunity becomes practical.
Fulham preparations hinge on final fitness checks
The clearest conclusion from this Liverpool injury update is that the three players cannot be grouped together.
Barcola has the most encouraging immediate outlook. Gakpo needs to demonstrate his readiness in training. Ekitike remains a longer-term consideration, with European involvement a cautious possibility.
For Fulham, Liverpool’s final session should bring greater clarity. Until then, Iraola has offered a useful distinction between expectation, assessment and hope.
