Since the 2026 NBA Draft has unfolded, one could make the easy argument that it has been a slow offseason for the Washington Wizards. Some of that was to be expected with several pieces already in the fold, while the prioritization of the team's draft standing allowed June to serve as a key part of the offseason plan. Yet it has still been an offseason where general manager Will Dawkins had several key questions to address as the organization shifts from rebuilding to rebuilt with playoff aspirations now in the conversation. To get there, Dawkins & Co. had the right answers to those questions. The Wizards entered the offseason with a clear need to upgrade its backcourt rotation, which proved to be filled in the opening days of free agency -- via the trade market. The arrival of Deandre Ayton adds not only a third top overall pick to the roster alongside Dybantsa and Anthony Davis, but adds an experienced rim protector to round out minutes at the five with Alex Sarr starting. The acquisition opens the door for the Wizards to employ double big lineups that have not been seen in Washington in arguably a decade when the Wizards had Brendan Haywood, Etan Thomas and JaVale McGee -- a trio that may not truly be comparable to the current roster. The arrival of Ayton cost Washington Jaden Hardy, a scoring guard who enjoyed a productive stint as the only one of the four players as part of the Anthony Davis trade to suit up for the Wizards following the trade deadline. Yet with Hardy likely staring at a minimum role given the influx of talent at the two, the trade coupled with future second round picks served as a win for Washington. D'Angelo Russell unsurprisingly opted into his player option, leaving Dawkins a question to answer about how a divorce would materialize. Yet sliding into what blossomed into a six team trade proved to be the perfect solution as Khris Middleton re-joined the Wizards for a second stint where he adds a veteran presence along the bench. The biggest questions, though, were with how the organization would proceed with contract extensions with the two newest pieces: Trae Young and Anthony Davis. Young's contract blew past in-season expectations after a projected three year, $120 million deal turned into four years, $212 million. While the league's changed lottery rules swayed the veteran point guard's potential free agent market compared to prior to the 2025-26 trade deadline, the Wizards would not have been able to find a comparable solution in the trade market other than Ja Morant, who has watched his stock plummet after playing in just 79 games over the last three seasons. Add the Wizards' value on Young's on and off-floor impact on its young core, Washington doubled down on its confidence in the 27 year old point guard with Travis Schlenk at the forefront of the front office's deeper connections. The other question was Anthony Davis, which was answered by postponing a final resolution, Amid durability concerns and months of back and forth about his interest in the organization and other NBA teams, the Wizards are opting to hold off until the regular season begins to explore Davis' future with the organization. With a chance to now have a healthy and motivated version of Anthony Davis make his Wizards debut, the front office made clear they're operating on their timeline and no one else's. Washington will also have questions to answer for Bilal Coulibaly and Cam Whitmore during the season given both opened their rookie extension window roughly one month prior to Davis with a possibility for clarity to emerge closer to the deadline. Of course, Washington still has one last roster spot to fill likely from a dwindling pool of available free agents. With a chance for the final roster move to add the final piece to the puzzle, it will also cap off an offseason filled with calculated risk that's drawn optimism from fans.
