Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel recently suggested that Omarion Hampton would not have the backfield to himself -- that Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal would mix in enough to potentially cap Hampton's ceiling. How should fantasy managers react? The short answer is: reacting is fine, but overreacting is counterproductive. A 2025 first-round pick, Hampton was drafted to serve as a franchise running back. He had 156 touches last year in nine games, putting him on a 17-game pace of 295. His elite broken-tackle rate and pass-catching skills were on full display. This guy is going to be an NFL star, and by extension, he'll be a fantasy star. If we take McDaniel's comments literally, it would mean Mitchell and/or Vidal will get plenty of run. Let's dig deeper. Mitchell tore up his knee near the end of his 2023 rookie campaign. When he returned in 2024, the former undrafted free agent had only 30 yards on 15 carries. While appearing to bounce back last year, his yards-after-first-contact and broken-tackle rate plummeted compared to 2023. The Ravens let him walk. Mitchell provides situational support. Barring another Hampton injury, it's unrealistic to believe Mitchell will take over games. He's earned more than nine carries only once since entering the league. The Chargers' backfield had 418 touches in 2025. Surely there's room for Mitchell to break his career-high of 67 touches without capping Hampton's ceiling. Then there's Vidal, a 2024 sixth-rounder who heroically took the reins last year with Hampton sidelined. Yet despite being solid, he was wildly inconsistent. He had less than 2.9 yards per carry in five starts. He had one of the NFL's worst broken-tackle rates. As a fill-in, he exceeded expectations. But as a rival to Hampton? No. Hopefully Hampton's value will decrease once McDaniel's words penetrate the fantasy market. The lower he goes, the better the payoff for managers seeking high-upside bargains. For a deeper dive into the fantasy outlooks in the Chargers' backfield, listen to this recent podcast episode.
