Deion Sanders has been subpoenaed to testify as a witness in his son Shilo Sanders’ bankruptcy trial, which is scheduled for the same week Colorado opens its 2026 football season. In 2015, a confrontation between then-15-year-old Shilo Sanders and a security guard at his Dallas school led to a lawsuit, a massive default judgment, and years of legal battles. This fall, that bankruptcy case heads to trial in Denver the same week Colorado kicks off its 2026 season at Georgia Tech. And Deion Sanders has been subpoenaed to testify.

Deion Sanders being subpoenaed for Shilo Sanders

In 2015, when Shilo was 15, a dispute occurred at his Dallas-area school involving John Darjean, then a security guard. Darjean claimed he attempted to confiscate Shilo’s phone at Deion Sanders’ direction amid a bitter family conflict involving Shilo’s mother, Pilar. According to Darjean, Shilo punched him and struck him with a roundhouse elbow to the neck area, aggravating a prior spinal injury and causing lasting harm that included incontinence.

Darjean sued Shilo and his parents in 2016. The parents were later dropped from the case, leaving Shilo as the sole defendant. In 2020, Shilo dismissed his attorneys. When the case went to trial in Texas in 2022, Shilo did not appear. A judge entered a default judgment against him for $11.89 million.

At a pretrial conference on August 14, Bankruptcy Judge Michael E. Romero noted that Deion Sanders had been subpoenaed to testify as a witness. The timing collides with Colorado’s season opener at Georgia Tech on September 3.

Deion did not witness the physical altercation, but Darjean has said the two spoke by phone shortly beforehand, and that Deion directed the phone confiscation. The judge observed that the conversation “may be relevant.” Darjean’s attorney indicated Deion’s testimony could help establish family dynamics, prior incidents, and Shilo’s state of mind that day including alleged restrictions on contact with his mother.

Judge Romero acknowledged the football conflict and said he would not be surprised if Deion tried to fight the subpoena. He added that he has no ties to the University of Colorado and does not care about the schedule, but recognized it as a potential issue. It is not yet clear from the public record whether Deion has been formally served or whether he will move to quash the subpoena.

Colorado’s season opener creates a scheduling clash

Colorado opens its 2026 season on Thursday, September 3, at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The game, moved up from a Saturday date, is set for an evening kickoff at Bobby Dodd Stadium and will air on ESPN. That places the Buffs’ first game squarely inside the window of Shilo’s bankruptcy trial.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, September 5, but was moved up two days to Thursday. Kickoff is set for the evening (8 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. MT), and the contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. It marks the Buffs’ first game of the year under head coach Deion Sanders and serves as an early non-conference test before they return home to face Weber State the following week.

This matchup carries extra history. Georgia Tech defeated Colorado 27-20 in Boulder the previous August, so the Buffs will be looking for a measure of revenge in Atlanta. As with most of Sanders’ tenure, the game is expected to draw significant national attention, both for the coach’s celebrity and for the program’s ongoing efforts to climb in the Big 12.

What makes the opener particularly notable this year is the unusual scheduling overlap with a family legal matter. Deion Sanders has been subpoenaed to testify as a witness in that trial, creating a potential conflict between his coaching duties and a court appearance during the same week his team takes the field for the first time in 2026.
