Which Browns could benefit most from preseason reps?

With many decisions to be made over the coming weeks, the preseason matchups will help the Cleveland Browns gain clarity on what they want to do this upcoming season. Head Coach Todd Monken will be able to use these games to evaluate and gather information across the roster to inform decisions for the start of the year. When it comes to the roster, which players in particular stand to benefit most from these preseason snaps?

Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders both have a lot to prove this preseason. It has been confirmed that Watson will start against the Chicago Bears, while Sanders will get the nod against the Buffalo Bills. If either quarterback can clearly separate themselves from the competition and consistently perform well, they could earn the starting job for the regular season. They will need to make every opportunity count. 

The Browns’ offensive line looks very different this year, and there will be some big decisions to make, including at Center. Cleveland’s 5th-round pick, Parker Brailsford, is likely to start as the backup behind Elgton Jenkins; however, nothing is set in stone. Brailsford has been dealing with a wrist injury, but if he can get healthy and put together some impressive performances in the preseason, he could compete for the starting role or, at the very least, secure the number 2 spot over Luke Wypler.

The line in general needs some time to gel, while the defense could benefit from a chance to go against offenses with some high-level QB play and consistent time together.

While winning preseason games doesn’t carry much weight, this will be a crucial period for a team undergoing significant transition to begin making important decisions about its future.
