Training camp practices were just the start of the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback battle. The real fun begins in preseason action.
\nFirst up, veteran Deshaun Watson. New Browns head coach Todd Monken announced Aug. 12 that Watson would start in Cleveland's preseason opener on Aug. 15 in Chicago. His competition for the starting job, second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders, will start Cleveland's second preseason game: home against the Bills on Aug. 22.
\nWatson, 30, hasn't seen any action in a game since 2024, when he ruptured his Achilles in Week 7 and was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Watson re-ruptured his Achilles in January 2025, which cost him all of last season as well.
\nFor the Bears, the preseason opener has lower stakes. Head coach Ben Johnson told reporters on Aug. 13 that starting quarterback Caleb Williams and "a number" of Chicago's other starters will not play in the Aug. 15 game.
