FAYETTEVILLE — Pessimism. There's no escaping it for this year's Arkansas football team, so Ryan Silverfield is choosing to ignore the negative outlook. The Razorbacks were picked to finish last in the SEC by the league's media and in our USA TODAY Sports preseason poll. Silverfield was adamant during SEC Media Days last month that he wants his team blocking out the noise. He'd prefer if the Hogs found different sources of motivation than low external expectations. From any vantage point outside the program, the lack of hype is impossible to ignore. It also provides an impossible task of defining what success would look like as Arkansas begins the Silverfield era.

Any first-year head coach wants to show improvement from the previous regime. The combination of Sam Pittman and Bobby Petrino went 2-10 last fall with zero SEC victories. Would 3-9 and a single conference win be good enough in 2026? Not according to the expectations Silverfield set for himself. "We wan to win right now," Silverfield said on an episode of the Next Up with Adam Breneman Podcast back in April. "We want to win this year. We want to have a great season. We want to have success." But there are still the realities of where Arkansas sits in the SEC pecking order. The Hogs are 4-20 in the league in the last three seasons. They have a grueling schedule that includes seven games against opponents ranked in the preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll. Six of those games are against teams in the conference. Reaching a bowl game would be a terrific achievement. That would entail a .500 season, something Arkansas has done just three times in the last nine years. Five wins should be deemed a success, even if that might not be a fun sentence to read for most of the fan base. The state yearns for a consistent winner, and while 5-7 would be a step in the right direction, it isn't a guarantee that sustained success is on the horizon. Depending on the journey, we could even consider four wins an accomplishment. Was there an upset victory against an SEC rival? Did the Razorbacks play better inside their home stadium than the previous three seasons under Pittman? Have players improved in his system, and did freshmen show they could be foundational pieces for Silverfield's future tenure? "Yes" answers to those four questions would certainly build momentum, but they haven't been outward focal points for Silverfield as the hours tick toward opening day. He isn't overhyping the 2026 season, instead consistently stressing that the biggest focus is on the small details. "We've got to be the best in the country in the controllables," Silverfield said on the eve of fall camp. Effort is one of those controllables, but that's hard to measure with any specific stats. We can look to turnovers and penalties, two categories the coaching staff is harping on in practice and at press conferences. At the end of the day, the coach knows he will be judged by his wins and losses. But thanks to the starting point, it's difficult to outline how we should judge Silverfield in year one. The nebulous eye test will come into play, but for us, he must simply deliver on his promise of having a more disciplined team. That will naturally lead to more victories.
