Scottie Scheffler has been working incredibly hard alongside his coach, Randy Smith, over the past few months.

Before his win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday, Scheffler had only won once on the PGA Tour in 2026.

That would have really irritated him, considering how many close calls he’s had this year, with five runner-up finishes to his name.

However, Scottie Scheffler‘s victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship was much-deserved, after he dominated the field to win by eight strokes.

Scheffler’s win at the FedEx St. Jude was an absolute masterclass in how to lead from the front.

And his victory in Memphis was all made possible by the scintillating 61 that he shot on Friday.

What Randy Smith noticed about Scottie Scheffler during the FedEx St. Jude

Randy Smith, Scheffler’s long-time coach, has been grinding away behind the scenes with the world number one recently.

While speaking on The Golf Channel Podcast with Rex and Lav, golf journalist Rex Hoggard revealed what Smith told him about Scheffler earlier this week at TPC Southwind.

“I had a long conversation with his swing coach, Randy Smith, earlier in the week about his putting,“ said Hoggard.

“He looked at Friday’s round, that 61. That’s what really put him out in front.

“That sort of gave him that head of steam to finish off the tournament and win by as many strokes as he did.

“When Randy looked at that Friday round, he said, ‘The difference was there were one or two putts over the course of that round that looked like they were going shoot past the hole, and at the last minute, they just turned and kind of fell in‘.

“He said, ‘that’s what’s been missing all season long‘.

“Like, the confidence in the putting is there because he’s done it in the past. He has enough history not to have too much scar tissue over the last 6 months.

“But to do it in the dominant fashion and to do it with his putter, I mean, this is the best tournament statistically in strokes gained putting of his career almost by a half shot.

“That’s something.“

Scottie Scheffler enjoying best ever putting season on the PGA Tour

Scheffler’s putting has actually been superb in 2026.

He is ranked third in strokes gained putting on the PGA Tour so far in 2026.

He gained more than nine strokes on the field last week on the greens at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

It was further evidence that when Scottie Scheffler putts well, he simply runs away with golf tournaments.

However, his long game was in pristine shape as well. He ranked second in strokes gained approach at TPC Southwind and 11th off the tee.

From tee to green, he gained nearly nine strokes on the field in Memphis.

Scottie Scheffler definitely gained confidence throughout the week at the FedEx St. Jude after he saw some long putts roll in during his second round.

From that moment on, he never relented and ended up winning the tournament comfortably. Scottie Scheffler putting like he did last week in Memphis is a really scary prospect for his rivals.
