AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF)- Week two of Football Friday night brings some enticing matchups, featuring one non-region game between two programs accustomed to winning: Lincoln County and Westside. The Patriots and Red Devils will go head-to-head at the Battlefield this Friday. Westside is coming off a 49-0 shutout win over Josey. "I think we did a good job on playing as a team, we have a young team, so I think it's going to be important this year that we can play as a team," said Westside quarterback Kaleb LaCarter. Meanwhile, the Red Devil players stepped up with a statement 14-7 win over 6A Grovetown.
"Our kids, the ones that are in the captains' spots learning to learn and understand you have to serve to lead, it's a blessing when kids learn and understand that it's fruit for the future and it's what you hope," said Lincoln County head coach Lee Chomskis. The two teams have only met four times, with the Red Devils leading the series 3-1. It'll be a tough test, but the Westside players are using this week as motivation.
"The physicality, I love the competition. I like that it's a good opponent, coming into my house, I'm not going to let anybody come into my house, kick their feet up and eat my chips in my living room, so you know it's good to have someone else come out here and try to beat me," said running back Kingston Hughes. "I feel like a lot of people have been doubting us as a team. They're obviously a really hype team, rightfully so, they went to state, they're a good team, not saying they're not I just feel like we have the guys to win that game. I think it's just another big stage to come out here," LaCarter said. For one Westside player, it's personal on and off the field. "I'm home, Lincoln County is where I'm from, so they already know what's up. On the field, it's business at the end of the day, I still love them but still going to try and beat you," defensive back and wide receiver Taveras Gresham. While the Patriots are looking to defend home turf, coach Chomskis knows that Lincoln County fans will travel well. "Our community, I don't have to say anything. They're ready and love Red Devil football, they're always excited about the team we put on the field," Chomskis said. Kickoff set for Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Westside High School.
