For the first time this school year, the polls are open! It's time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Boys Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 17-22. The Daytona Beach News-Journal gathers nominees for upcoming polls from across the area via email at cvinel@usatodayco.com. Please send a player's name, school and notable statistics for a given week. Submissions are due no later than 8 a.m. every Monday. To round out the ballot, our staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online or submitted by local coaches. Athletes for all in-season sports, except football, are eligible. The News-Journal recognizes the local gridiron stars with our weekly game balls story. Voting in the online poll below will close at 10 a.m. Friday.
Cross-country Liam Harman, Father Lopez: The sophomore ranked 94th at the Jim Ryun FCA Invitational, running to a 20:00.15 time. Maddox Kokin, New Smyrna Beach: Kokin kicked off his senior season with a 17:51, slotting 19th in the Division B run at the Cecil Field Summer Classic. Golf Peyten Patel, Spruce Creek: The junior tied teammate Carson Perry for first in the Hawks' nine-hole victory over Father Lopez. Patel fired a one-under-par 35 with two birdies.
