Fall sports are upon us in full as cross country starts up the week of Aug. 24.

Volleyball opened its season last week, while soccer and girls tennis have been competing for a couple of weeks and golf's start dates back to the end of July.

Also in full swing are the Marion Star's Athlete of the Week polls for boys and girls.

Fans can vote for their favorite nominees in the boys and girls poll below. The polls will remain open through 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, and readers may vote as often as allowed.

Here are this week's nominated top performers:

Marion Star Boys Athlete of the Week for Aug. 24

River Valley golfer Asher Gates shot a 6-under-par 66 at Valley View in the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference's first of four tournaments. It was the second lowest 18-hole score in RV history.

Pleasant golfer Max Diamond shot a 76 n the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference's first of four tournaments.

North Union golfer Alex Jolliff shot a 38 in a win over Benjamin Logan.

Ridgedale golfer Jake Shipley shot a 37 at Three Sticks in a win over Fredericktown.

Marion Harding soccer player Angel De La Cruz posted a hat trick in a win over Tiffin Columbian.

Best of the week column: Week 2 football standings, schedule: Marion Star Girls Athlete of the Week for Aug. 24Northmor golfer Sydni Setser shot a 47 in a win over Mount Gilead.

North Union volleyball's Katelyn Zimmerman recorded 11 kills, nine aces, 15 points and three blocks in a loss to Highland.

Elgin volleyball's Kadence Gear put up 16 kills and 23 digs in a win over Colonel Crawford.

Pleasant volleyball's Kam Cocherl put down 20 kills in a win over Buckeye Central.

Ridgedale volleyball's Camryn Thiel produced 27 points, four aces, 19 digs and 15 assists in a win over Bucyrus.

River Valley soccer's Sarina Strother scored five goals with an assist in a win over Bellevue.

Highland soccer's Chloe Perdas completed a shutout in goal during a win over Buckeye Valley.

Marion Harding soccer's Urszula Lisiecki scored two goals in a win over Tiffin Columbian.

The first night of the OHSAA Jesse Owens Track and Field State Championships were held June 4, 2026, in Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Last week's winners

Gates won the first boys poll of the season, earning 167 of 230 votes (73 percent) to win it over Pleasant soccer's Rosric Gomez and North Union golfer Ethan Monroe.

Marion Harding tennis player Kaelyn Bonsel won the girls poll with 1,275 of 1,393 votes (92 percent). Other nominees were Strother and North Union golfer Delaney Workman.
