Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40 Updated With New Safety & Tech Features
Volvo Cars has announced a series of updates for its 40-series models, with the XC40, EX40 and EC40 receiving revisions to their design, cabin technology and safety systems. The changes are intended to improve usability and bring the three models in line with Volvo’s latest technology suite.
On the exterior, the updated models receive a revised front-end treatment featuring redesigned Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, along with changes to the grille, bonnet, front bumper and front wings. The XC40, EX40 and EC40 retain their respective model identities, while the XC40 also gets newly designed 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch diamond-cut wheel options. At the rear, the XC40 and EX40 receive redesigned LED lighting, tailgates and bumpers, while the EC40 retains its existing rear-end design.
Inside, the most notable change is a new 11.2-inch infotainment display. Volvo says the larger screen is designed to make accessing frequently used functions quicker, while continuing to use the company’s connected user interface.
The updated cars will also feature Google’s Gemini AI assistant, allowing occupants to interact with the system using natural-language commands. The assistant can be used for functions such as route planning, finding locations and managing messages. Other cabin changes include an updated wireless phone charger, new upholstery and additional trim options.
The XC40, for example, can now be specified with Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery combined with Brown Ash wood trim. Black Ash and aluminium decorative finishes are also available, along with changes to the cabin lighting.
Safety technology forms another major part of the update. Volvo has equipped the refreshed 40-series models with an expanded sensor suite comprising new front and corner radars, a front-facing camera, rear corner radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and updated parking cameras.
These systems support a range of active safety and driver-assistance functions. Automatic emergency braking and automatic emergency steering are designed to intervene when the vehicle detects a potential collision. A new Door Opening Alert can warn occupants about approaching cyclists or other road users before they open a door.
The optional Pilot Assist system has also been revised. It now incorporates lane-change assistance and is claimed to provide smoother road-following behaviour. Meanwhile, the optional 360-degree camera has been upgraded to provide a 3D view, potentially making parking and low-speed manoeuvring easier.
The electric EX40 and EC40 continue to cater to buyers looking for a fully electric option. Volvo claims the EX40 can deliver up to 575km of range on a single charge, while the EC40 is rated for up to 584km, depending on configuration and applicable testing conditions.
The company is also continuing to rely on over-the-air software updates, allowing certain features and software improvements to be introduced after the vehicles have been delivered.
Order books for the updated 40-series models, including Black Edition variants, have opened in selected markets. Production is scheduled to begin later in the autumn. Availability, specifications and equipment are expected to vary by market.
