Venus Williams, of the United States, serves to Emiliana Arango, of Colombia, at the Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, on Friday, August 14, 2026.

Venus Williams recorded her 14th straight singles loss, falling in the first round of the Cincinnati Open on Friday. Williams lost 6-2, 6-2 to World No. 95 Emilia Arango in a match that lasted only 66 minutes.

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, has been heavily criticized for taking wildcards into tournaments, with many arguing that she is taking a spot away from a more deserving player.

Tennis insider Jon Wertheim said it is jarring to see Williams struggle so much, but he sided with tournaments that felt it necessary to reward legendary players with wildcards.

“As for Venus, agree it’s jarring to see such an esteemed, prideful player lose like this. But WCs are so problematic, if a champion wants to play on and events want to reward past > present/future, let them both. I struggle to get too worked up here….”

Wertheim’s response was to a user on X who said Williams is not as competitive as she used to be, and that it’s more important to hand opportunities to younger players.

“At some point, tournaments have to stop giving wild cards to Venus, even with the name recognition. This will be her 14th straight loss. I admire her career but she is not competitive and there are more deserving players for the wild cards @jon_wertheim.”

Williams, 46, has also received a wildcard for the doubles event, where she will compete alongside her sister Serena.

The Cincinnati Open was Williams’s 11th wildcard this season.

Venus Williams’ First-Round Singles Exit in Cincinnati

Venus Williams’ singles campaign in Cincinnati ended after 25-year-old qualifier Emilia Arango defeated her in straight sets in the first round.

Arango converted four of her five break points en route to a comfortable win. Williams won only 41% of her first-serve points, compared to Arango, who managed 71%.

The Colombian will face Toronto champion Iga Swiatek in the second round, while Venus Williams will team up with Serena to take on Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns on Sunday.
