The U.S. earned team bronze in eventing at the World Equestrian Championships, marking the first world medal for 62-year-old Phillip Dutton, who in 2028 can become the oldest U.S. Olympian since art competitions were held at the Games in the 1930s.
The U.S. team of Dutton (riding Denim) William Coleman, (Diabolo), Caroline Pamukcu (HSH Blake) and Boyd Martin (Cooley Nutcracker) took third behind the United Kingdom and Germany at worlds in Aachen, Germany, on Sunday.
Dutton owns three Olympic medals over his seven Olympic appearances -- gold with the Australian team in 1996 and 2000, then individual bronze for the U.S. in 2016 after becoming a U.S. citizen in 2006.
That medal in Rio made Dutton the oldest individual U.S. Olympic medalist in any sport since World War II, according to Olympedia.org.
He did not make the 2024 Olympic team, snapping his streak of competing at every Games starting with Atlanta 1996.
In this his eighth World Championships (formerly called the World Equestrian Games), Dutton made his first world podium. He was previously fourth with the Australian team in 1994 and with the U.S. team in 2010.
The World Equestrian Championships run through Sunday, with the team and individual jumping medals still to be decided.
