Under-the-radar Colts defender seems to be making late 53-man roster push

One under-the-radar defender could be making a late push for the Indianapolis Colts' final 53-man roster. When speaking with reporters on Monday, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said that safety Trey Washington was giving him and the coaching staff something to think about with his play. "I like how Trey came back, starting physically," Anarumo said, via Colts.com. "I felt like he had really improved his quickness, his overall speed and knowledge of the defense. I really liked what he's shown in the preseason. He's been consistent. He's a very smart football player. He's certainly giving us some things to think about at that position." In two preseason games, Washington has made eight total tackles, while allowing only one reception for eight yards. Most of his snaps have come at free safety, according to PFF, but he has lined up in the box as well. Washington is at a position group where already four roster spots are accounted for between Cam Bynum, AJ Haulcy, Hunter Wohler, and Jonathan Owens. While not a given, it isn't uncommon for a team to roster five safeties, although for what it's worth, the Colts did not do that last year under Anarumo. A likely differentiator for Washington will have to come on special teams, since that is where the bulk of his playing time would likely come. In the preseason, he's played 29 snaps, contributing to five of the six different phases. Fellow safety Juanyeh Thomas could also be a candidate to fill that fifth spot on the depth chart. Washington signed with the Colts after the 2025 NFL draft as a UDFA. He appeared in four regular-season games.
