Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson breakdown: Strawweight scrappers The co-main event for UFC 330 features a strawweight title fight between recent vacant title winner Mackenzie Dern and Gillian Robertson. Despite grappling being her bread and butter, Robertson has steadily been improving her striking and overall game under the tutelage of Din Thomas and The Goat Shed Academy. Although Robertson isn’t the biggest power hitter, she seems to be getting a solid sense of striking flows and when to throw in combination. From inside parry attempts off jabs to body knees in clinch space, Robertson makes a concerted effort to change up her levels of attack. Defense isn’t necessarily the Canadian-born fighter’s strong suit, but Robertson seems to understand that pressure is a key part of her game. That said, the challenger will have to respect the power coming back at her Saturday.
Even though Dern made her name in the grappling world, she has shown no fear in taking on the striking challenges that MMA presents. A naturally heavy-handed fighter, Dern seems to generate decent power in her right hand, visibly stunning opponents whenever she lands clean. And though Dern’s durability and skills as a grappler may have gotten her through portions of her career thus far, she has steadily been sharpening her striking under the care of Jason Parillo. A striking coach who has helped former champions like B.J. Penn, Michael Bisping, and Cris Cyborg, Parillo appears to be assisting Dern in working out both the rawness and the bad habits in her game. Nevertheless, Dern’s defense still leaves a lot to be desired, as her old habits of ducking her head and lowering her guard reveal themselves when under heavy fire. Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson point of interest: Winning the wrestling Considering that both fighters are top-level grapplers, winning the wrestling will likely be paramount. Always sticking to a clear and consistent game plan, there's no secret about what someone like Robertson wants. A grapple-first fighter, Robertson has multiple ways to get to her preferred winning conditions. Although Robertson was initially more reliant on clinching scenarios early on in her career, she has since developed a decent shot entry to her takedowns. Typically chaining to and from her favored single-leg position, Robertson does well when it comes to turning her opposition in order to find her finishes. And when “The Savage” can get to bodylock positions, the 31-year-old does well at manipulating her opponent’s legs in order to shuck off to an angle and lift. However, despite being a former flyweight, Robertson may have trouble muscling around her current counterpart in closed quarters. Aside from Dern’s notable grappling reputation, the Arizona-born Brazilian is also familiar in said phases and looks for a majority of her takedowns along the fence as well. Dern can be a wild woman as far as her no-fear attitude when it comes to throwing sacrificial leg entanglements into the mix, but I’m not sure how much she’ll look for those attacks in this matchup. Dern has also shown improvements to her level-changing shots in open space recently, so don’t be shocked if she looks to flip the script by grounding Robertson early. That said, Robertson, akin to her current counterpart, is no slouch off of her back. Not only does Robertson have some legitimate threats from full guard, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt can also channel her inner Demian Maia when it comes to wrestling up from half-guard. Robertson is also good about isolating one of her opponent's legs in transition – something that assists in her control of the positions. Once Robertson can secure her favored half-guard position from the top, she wastes little time when it comes to working toward the back and funneling her opposition toward her preferred choke points. Nevertheless, Robertson will still need to be on her best behavior given that Dern is still an excellent grappler in transition who is always just one mistake away from being able to close the show in MMA. Whether she is playing in or out of the gi, Dern has never been afraid to give a little in order to gain a lot. Dern may get a bit sloppy and wild with technique at times, but her athleticism, skill and understanding of the position tend to allow her to operate with impunity. Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson odds The oddsmakers and the public favor the Brazilian, listing Dern -230 and Robertson +176 via FanDuel. Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson prediction, pick Many people are comparing the stylistic dynamics of this fight to Dern’s last outing with Virna Jandiroba, and they’re not necessarily wrong. That said, there are key differences to keep in mind for this matchup. Despite Jandiroba often getting overlooked and underrated due to her unassuming demeanor and janky striking, I’d argue that “Cacara” is both more powerful and more durable than Robertson (with the latter being especially important in this equation). Even though I believe that Robertson is the better offensive wrestler whose single-leg game will have plenty of play, I have a hard time seeing her maintain success down the stretch unless she’s able to get off some serious damage early. Robertson may have improved the ground striking aspect of her game in recent years, but I’m still not sure she’ll be able to get to her home base of operations that is the topside half-guard (a position that very few women have been able to establish on Dern, in or out of the octagon).
Say what you will about Dern and that rough stretch of her career where she was away from Jason Parillo, but she has proven to be someone who can dig deep into fights and continue to push hard in victory or defeat. Whereas Robertson, who is not beyond getting discouraged or stopped in her fights, has shown to slow in previous three-round affairs. I know that Din Thomas will have Robertson prepared with a great game plan, but one could argue that Robertson is the much easier fighter to game plan for given her fairly singular approach. And though I’d much rather see Robertson and company have their day, this feels like a fight that Dern can snatch away from her at a moment’s notice. Not only does Dern have edges in durability, power and athleticism, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion has proven to make some serious hay with the ground positions that Robertson, even in victory, tends to give way to. Couple that with Dern’s ability to sway rounds her way, even ones she doesn’t deserve (e.g., her controversial win over Tecia Pennington), and it feels like heartbreak for the Canadian-born Floridian is inevitable. I would love to be wrong, but the official pick is Dern by armbar in Round 3.
