Tottenham Hotspur 2026/27 Premier League preview: Spending spree may not deliver the desired results

Tottenham Hotspur will head into the 2026/27 season aiming to put two thoroughly miserable Premier League campaigns behind them.

Flirting with relegation in consecutive seasons was undoubtedly a hugely embarrassing outcome for one of the so-called ‘Big Six’ clubs.

Tottenham have splashed the cash this summer in a bid to force their way back up the standings under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Read on as we assess whether Spurs can start heading in the right direction again.

Tottenham Hotspur Premier League season 2026/27 preview

Tottenham have been active in the summer transfer window, but you would be hard-pressed to argue that they have been prudent with their spending.

Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke have arrived at the club for a combined cost of £230 million. That is a lot to pay for mid-table players.

The free transfer acquisitions of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi look shrewd on paper, yet their respective ages do not scream long-term thinking.

Tottenham still need to strengthen their attacking options, and it will be intriguing to see if they can complete more business before the transfer window closes.

De Zerbi has been bullish about his ability to succeed at Tottenham, saying he wants to assemble a squad the fans can identify with.

“I would like to create something special in the style of play, for sure,” he said. “But, first of all, before the style of play, I want to build a real soul of the team.

“I would like, when we go to play in the Premier League, during the game, at home, away, the people have to recognise the team on the pitch as an organisation, as a style of play, for sure, but also to recognise the soul, the passion, the value of the player.

“I love generous players. I love the players who play with pride to wear this shirt and pride to stay in Tottenham. Because the qualities of the players are not enough.

“If you don’t put something more, something of yourself, something you feel inside of you, it is very tough competing with the top teams in the world – in the Premier League as well.”

It is difficult not to be impressed by De Zerbi’s confidence, but that won’t be enough to turn Tottenham into Premier League title contenders.

Their squad lacks the depth of the other primary contenders, and challenging for European qualification may be as good as it gets for Tottenham this season.
