Tony Romo’s time in the CBS broadcast booth could soon be coming to an end, according to former NFL quarterback and sports analyst Boomer Esiason.

"If I had to guess, purely speculation given what’s going on right now, I would think it’s over," Esiason said on WFAN.

"He may end up going somewhere else and getting things straightened out."

NFL ANALYST TONY ROMO PLACED ON LEAVE BY CBS SPORTS FOLLOWING DRUNK DRIVING ARREST IN WISCONSIN

Esiason's warning comes after Romo was arrested in Milwaukee in late July on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Police booked the former Dallas Cowboys star after he failed field sobriety tests and refused a chemical test. And CBS reacted fast. The network placed Romo on indefinite leave and promoted J.J. Watt to replace him alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson in the lead broadcast booth.

Esiason explained that moving Romo to another role at CBS isn't realistic. When Romo took over the top spot in 2017, CBS shipped veteran quarterback Phil Simms to The NFL Today. That escape hatch is gone. The studio desk is already packed, especially after adding Russell Wilson. And moving a $17 million broadcaster down the pecking order to call lower-profile games hardly makes sense.

That leaves CBS with one logical move: cut ties altogether.

For CBS, the arrest could provide an easy exit from a partnership that had already lost its shine. Romo burst onto the scene in 2017 by predicting plays before they happened, but the magic has worn off. Critics and fans have hammered him for poor preparation, repetitive comments and constantly talking over Nantz. Things got bad enough that CBS executives reportedly sat Romo down in 2023 and told him to clean up his act in the booth.

CBS was already paying top dollar for diminishing returns.

Now, with a high-profile arrest right before the football season begins, the network could have a path to walk away completely. The arrest may be the final straw for CBS, but Romo had been wearing out his welcome in the booth long before police pulled him over.
