Rudy Gobert’s latest offseason post offered a first look at a trip Minnesota had been planning for weeks.

The work happened in France, where Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball joined the center before their first season together.

Minnesota changed the shape of its roster this summer, and a few days of informal work gave three starters room to learn each other without a coach stopping every possession.

Edwards Wanted the Time Together

Edwards had already explained why he wanted teammates around each other before camp, saying, “It’s just like AAU. The closer you and your team are, the more chance y'all got to win a championship."

His point fits a group that will ask Ball to handle the ball, Gobert to screen and Edwards to decide when to attack or give the play another second.

Gobert remains one of the league’s most productive interior players, averaging 11.5 rebounds while shooting 68.2 percent last season.

Ball brings a different passing style than Minnesota has used recently, so their timing on rolls, lobs and short catches needs repetition.

The Wolves already know how much easier their defense becomes when Gobert is settled in the middle.

His teammates have also seen the work required to build chemistry around him, especially when new guards are learning where he wants the ball.

Edwards has played beside Gobert long enough to help with that translation.

He can tell Ball which angles create the cleanest catch and when Gobert prefers the guard to keep driving, making the summer sessions more specific than ordinary pickup games.

Ball Changes the Offensive Conversation

Minnesota acquired Ball to add another creator beside Edwards, while keeping Gobert in place as the screen setter and defender behind a smaller backcourt.

Ball averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists last season, and his willingness to throw early passes should give Gobert chances before the defense is set.

Edwards can benefit too because he won’t have to start every important possession from a standstill.

The risk is mostly about rhythm.

Ball likes to improvise, Edwards can turn any opening into a drive and Gobert depends on guards noticing the space his screens create.

Minnesota has already made Ball a central part of its new direction, which leaves less room for those habits to develop slowly.

Their defensive work deserves the same attention because Ball will hear Gobert calling coverage from behind him.

A guard who trusts that call can press farther into the ball without guessing where the help will arrive.

The Trip Gives Camp a Head Start

The France workout won’t settle rotations or close games in August, though it can remove some basic hesitation.

Ball can see how quickly Gobert turns toward the rim, while Edwards gets an early feel for when the new point guard wants to push.

Minnesota has watched Edwards grow into more responsibility with every season, and organizing time with teammates is another part of that job.
