One of the key narratives throughout the Pittsburgh Pirates' 2026 season has been the number of rookies who have stepped up and made an immediate impact. Konnor Griffin did just that.

One of the key narratives throughout the Pittsburgh Pirates' 2026 season has been the number of rookies who have stepped up and made an immediate impact. Konnor Griffin did just that at the beginning of the year, Esmerlyn Valdez put together a historically good stretch in July, and now it's Rafael Flores Jr.'s turn to cement himself as a staple of the team's future. Pittsburgh's No. 12 overall prospect made his season debut back in June, but was optioned back down to Triple-A just a few days later. He then landed on the injured list with a concussion shortly after being called back during the first week of July. It's been a disjointed season for Flores, but when he's been on the field, the 25-year-old has looked like he belonged, especially over the last week. Flores is 5-for-12 in his last three games, which includes three home runs and an astonishing eight RBI over that stretch. On Friday night against the Boston Red Sox, Flores hit a solo home run in the second inning and notched an RBI single in the fourth inning. Going back to his performance against the Marlins, Flores logged an RBI in four straight  The Pittsburgh rookie is the first player to accomplish that feat since Starling Marte in 2018, per the team.  Aug 13, 2026; Miami, Florida, USA; Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Rafael Flores Jr. (43) hits a three-run home run in the ninth inning against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park. Mandatory Credit: Jim Rassol-Imagn Images Flores isn't just having a hot stretch at the plate; the rookie is becoming increasingly more important for Pittsburgh's game plan. The Pirates don't have much right-handed hitting (something they should have addressed at the trade deadline) and have struggled against left-handed pitchers this season. Flores has been an exception to that, though, albeit in a small sample size.  Flores, a righty with a 1.320 OPS against southpaws in 23 plate appearances, is a crucial piece of the Pirates' success against left-handers. Whether it's catching or as the designated hitter, expect him to be in the lineup every time the Pirates are facing a southpaw for the rest of the season. "It's been really impressive," said manager Don Kelly of Flores' recent stretch. "He's been swinging the bat well, working hard and really cool to see him have the success he's had the last couple days." Even though the Pirates may be falling further out of the National League playoff hunt, Flores has an opportunity over the final few weeks of the season to truly show that he has what it takes to be a staple for the team into the future.
