Shedeur Sanders acknowledged that his recent media approach did not benefit the Cleveland Browns.

The second-year quarterback previously offered brief answers during a media session, creating tension around his press interactions. On Wednesday, he addressed the situation directly and explained why he pulled back from reporters.

This explanation has now drawn reactions from Browns fans and NFL experts, while the quarterback competition continues to capture attention.

Browns Fans React to Shedeur Sanders’ Apology

Sanders apologized to reporters on Wednesday after his previous media availability featured short and unhelpful answers. The Browns star outlined that he dislikes situations where outside narratives create friction between the team and its supporters, which contributed to his decision to shut down.

“I want to apologize for how I was last time I came up here before y’all” Sanders said. “I dislike when there’s a lot of separation and when something gets between the team, and people get painted a certain way.”

His apology drew mixed reactions from Browns fans on X, with some supporting him and others questioning the need for an apology altogether.

Relle da 5’5” called Sanders “a very stand-up dude” and criticized some of the quarterback’s supporters for becoming overly protective of him. The reaction focused less on the original media exchange and more on Sanders’ own comments about handling the situation.

Another fan took a different view, arguing that Sanders should not feel compelled to explain himself to reporters. He wrote, “This answer will make him lose that starting spot; he shouldn’t be explaining himself to reporters. I hope he wins it, but he doesn’t look like he’s been lifting weights. At least strengthen the shoulders.”

Sanders also had his fair share of supporters who criticized the Cleveland media. “We are starting to see in real time who the problem is in Cleveland and it’s not the quarterbacks,” one supporter wrote.

Another offered perhaps the simplest response, asking, “Why would he apologize? All this kid does is work!” NFL analyst Eric Urbanowicz took a more measured approach, saying, “Credit where it’s due, that’s a huge step…he can be a humble and likeable guy BUT end of the day, he’s still a kid and learning.”

The situation also comes as Sanders, who ranked 37th in PFN’s NFL QB Impact Rankings, competes for the Browns’ starting quarterback job. Cleveland is evaluating him alongside Deshaun Watson, with preseason playing time giving both quarterbacks opportunities to make their cases.

This pressure makes Sanders’ comments about media narratives particularly relevant. His draft position has also shaped the way some spectators view his confidence. Former All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy said Sanders could have entered the NFL with a different mindset had he been selected in the 1st round.

“I think if he were the first-round quarterback, his confidence [would’ve] been even better, even bigger,” McCoy said on the Speakeasy podcast. “Being a fifth-round pick and doing your first round, your confidence ain’t the same.”

McCoy added that confidence plays a major role for young players and suggested Sanders may still feel like an outsider because of how teams treated him after he fell to the fifth round. For Sanders, the apology gives him a chance to move past the media issue and keep the focus on football.
