Tennessee made Kaden Craft feel like its quarterback from the very beginning.
That approach paid off as the 2028 four-star quarterback from Mooresville (N.C.) Lake Norman has committed to Josh Heupel and the Volunteers over schools like Florida, Michigan and Ole Miss.
The No. 102 prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking says Tennessee separated itself almost immediately after offering earlier this spring.
“They showed me the most love out of any school,” Craft told Rivals. “They were always on me, recruiting me as hard as possible. The staff just kept exceeding the bar for me.”
Craft’s relationship with Tennessee began before he ever held an offer.
He attended the Volunteers’ game against Arkansas during the season before the coaching staff visited him to watch him throw and eventually extended an offer this spring.
After earning the offer, Craft wasted little time returning to Knoxville.
He watched spring practice, spent multiple days around the program and later returned for a two-day summer visit.

Each trip only strengthened Tennessee’s position.
“That was the best visit,” Craft said. “I felt like the coaches, the plan they gave me and everything they showed me about developing quarterbacks was outstanding. Seeing the quarterback room and how they coach at practice, I thought very highly of it.”
The Vols never lost that momentum.
“It left a great impression,” he said. “That’s why I kept visiting. They kept recruiting me hard too, and that led to my commitment.”
Quarterback development sealed the deal
During Craft’s summer camp, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle worked closely with him on the field. Heupel was involved too.
Craft immediately noticed improvement.
“They were still going over the same things, and in that one camp session I felt a lot of improvement,” he said. “They even pulled up Hendon Hooker up and previous quarterbacks and showed how they developed them. I thought it was great.”
That development plan became one of the biggest reasons Tennessee ultimately landed his commitment.
“I would say first off, every time I went, it felt like home,” Craft said. “I could already imagine myself playing there.
“The college town, the atmsophere, the coaches — I love everything about Tennessee.”
He also loved the consistency.
“They kept constant pressure recruiting me and making me feel like I was the No. 1 guy and the priority. That was big for me because they recruited me harder than anyone else.”
Ultimately, quarterback development proved to be the deciding factor.
“At the end of the day, it was really quarterback development. There are soe many things I love about Tennessee, but that development was big.”
Heupel and Halzle stood out
Craft believes Tennessee’s quarterback room is unique because everyone coaching the position has played it.
“They’ve done it at a high level,” he said. “Everyone in the quarterback room has played quarterback, so they understand it.”
He especially appreciated how involved Heupel remains despite serving as head coach.
“Coach Heupel being that involved in the quarterback room is very important to me. He’s pretty much in every quarterback meeting.”
As for Halzle, Craft loved his coaching style.
“He understands quarterbacks. He coaches them very hard at practice, and you can see that brings energy. I like how he coaches quarterbacks. I think it’s unique.”
Recruiting starts now
With his own decision complete, Craft now plans to help Tennessee build around him.
Two of the first players he hopes to recruit are fellow North Carolinians Ryan Peterson and Braylon Clark, one of the nation’s top wide receivers.
“I’ve played with Braylon since we were six years old,” Craft said. “He’s obviously going to be a big target. Ryan is another one I plan to work on.
“I am going to start putting together a list and start recruiting.”
When Craft begins recruiting for the Volunteers, his message will be simple.
“The offense is explosive, you’re going to get looks, you’re playing SEC football at the highest level, and the coaching staff is going to show you genuine love,” he said. “I honestly believe Tennessee’s coaching staff is one of the best in the country.”
