Photo Credit: Erik Williams-Imagn Images With the NBA releasing the 2026-2027 schedule today, the Houston Rockets now have their schedule for the upcoming season, and in their first game of the year, they will be matching up with an in-state opponent in the form of the Dallas Mavericks to start the season. This matchup between the Rockets and Mavericks will take place at the Toyota Center on Wednesday, October 23rd, at 5:30 PM, with the streaming details yet to be announced. On the Rockets' side, this is very interesting mainly because they have a matchup against their other in-state opponent, the San Antonio Spurs, two days later, which was announced earlier in the week. With Houston having two games in Texas to start the year, this is a tremendous opportunity to start the year 2-0. Shifting the focus back onto this matchup with the Mavericks, this could be a very entertaining matchup and may very well set the tone for the early part of the season for both teams. The Rockets will be hoping to build off a season where they made the playoffs as the fifth seed with a record of 52-30 but went down in the first-round, while the Mavericks are hoping to be a much better team after going 26-56 and finishing 12th in the Western Conference. In terms of young talent, Houston and Dallas both have promising futures and may become key pieces of championship rosters in the future. The Mavericks have the 2025 rookie of the year in Cooper Flagg and Derrick Lively, who is just 22 years old and has become a strong presence on the interior. On the other hand, Houston has a great young defensive star in Amen Thompson and is complemented by Alperen Sengun, who has a variety of skills on the offensive end, in addition to Tari Eason, Jabari Smith Jr., and Reed Sheppard, who seem to be progressing well early in their careers, This matchup also includes a great collection of veterans who still have the ability to impact games. On the Mavericks' side, they have Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, and Kyrie Irving, who is still recovering from a torn left ACL. Conversely, Houston's list of veterans includes Kevin Durant, Steven Adams, Marcus Smart, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Fred VanVleet, who is also recovering from a major injury after tearing his right ACL and right meniscus. Overall, this matchup has plenty of talent across the board and should have a great opportunity to deliver an excellent showcase on opening night for all the fans and NBA experts. As far as key matchups, this game may come down to one critical one, which is the point guard battle between Irving and VanVleet, who are both coming off major injuries. At this point, it seems that both Irving and VanVleet are in a good position to play in the opener, which should be great for their teams and the fans. Really what this matchup will come down to is who can initiate offense more consistently between Irving and VanVleet, and if the game is tight down the stretch who is able to make the right play to put their team in the best position possible. There are definitely plenty of other matchups that could impact this game, but with both Irving and VanVleet returning after missing most of the 2025 season, this seems to be a matchup that could be the most impactful as a year ago the Mavericks sorely missed Irving and the Rockets really missed VanVleet. So, heading into opening night, it does seem that the Rockets and Mavericks should be set for a great matchup, and if Irving and VanVleet are both ready to go, this point guard matchup could impact this game in a major way.
