The Hobby Grows Up: Tom Brady’s CardVault Lands All-Star Investors to Build a 100-Store Empire
For decades, the local card shop (LCS) was a charmingly chaotic sanctuary. It was usually a cramped room in a sleepy strip mall, smelling of cardboard and manned by a singular owner who knew exactly who you collected. But the sun is slowly setting on the mom-and-pop era.
The trading card hobby is maturing rapidly, and while it might be slightly terrifying for traditionalists, the arrival of institutional capital and polished corporate ambition is undeniably exciting. The billionaires have officially arrived, and they are here to build empires.
Today, CardVault by Tom Brady, the rapidly expanding sports collectibles retailer, announced its first strategic investor group. The move is designed to fund the company’s next phase of massive national growth. The list of backers doesn’t just legitimize the space; it reads like a global summit of sports, business, media, and entertainment titans.
The strategic investor group includes:
  • Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter
  • New York Yankees Captain Aaron Judge
  • Edmonton Oilers Captain Connor McDavid
  • UFC President and CEO Dana White
  • The Kraft Group
  • Fenway Sports Group Principal Owner John Henry
  • Boston Celtics Co-Owner Wyc Grousbeck
  • RedBird Capital Founder Gerry Cardinale
  • Silver Lake Co-CEOs Egon Durban and Greg Mondre

Since Tom Brady acquired a 50 percent ownership stake in February 2025, CardVault has exploded, scaling from just 3 stores to 17 locations nationwide in just over a year. Now, alongside co-founders Ed Kane, Randy Greenstein, Chris Costa, Tim Bonito, and Scott Heigelmann, the group aims to build a sprawling network of 100+ stores located in premier sports and entertainment destinations.
“Collecting today is about much more than owning a card,” Brady said in the release. “It’s about the stories, the memories and the community that brings fans together. CardVault is building a place where every collector from someone opening their first pack to lifelong hobbyists can share that passion.”

The Big Box Encroachment and the Rise of the Chain

CardVault isn’t alone in recognizing the retail gold rush occurring within the hobby. The landscape of where and how we buy cards is shifting beneath our feet. Massive big-box retailers like GameStop and Target are dedicating unprecedented amounts of inventory and floor space to sports cards and TCGs. Even mall-staple Lids is transforming its strategy; as I detailed earlier this year in corporate retailers are aggressively “redefining the in-store footprint” to blend streetwear, sports culture, and collectible cards into one seamless shopping experience.
And then there is the rise of the mega-chain. Influential figures are seeing the upside of modernizing the card shop. Global Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton recently entered the trading card shop business to capture the high-end collector market (The Athletic), while hobby heavyweights like Geoff Wilson continue their aggressive expansion, recently bringing the massive CardsHQ footprint into Detroit.

The New “Third Place”

What separates these new flagship mega-stores from the dusty shops of the 1990s is the core business model. They are no longer just retail stores; they are lifestyle destinations.
CardVault locations are known for signature vault doors highlighting authenticated memorabilia, dedicated spaces for live-streaming “CardVault Breaks,” and in-house drop-offs for grading partners like PSA, SGC, and Beckett.
As I recently explored in Local Card Shops Evolving for the Modern Era, the modern card shop is evolving to rival bars, bowling alleys, and cafes. They are becoming the ultimate “third place”, a community hub where people choose to spend their time and money away from home and work.
“From day one, our vision has been to build the next generation hobby shop at scale,” noted CardVault Co-Founder Chris Costa. “A premier national retail destination where fans, athletes and collectors come together.”

A Nuanced New Era

For legacy collectors, there is an inherent sadness in watching the rugged edges of the hobby get sanded down by corporate polish. The thrill of digging through an unorganized $1 monster box in the back of a dimly lit strip-mall shop is being replaced by bright lights, automated retail kiosks, and high-end digital commerce platforms.
But there is also a profound level of excitement that comes with this evolution. The hobby is no longer a niche, underground pursuit—it has been recognized as a permanent, validated pillar of global sports culture. With titans like JAY-Z, Brady, and Fenway Sports Group throwing their financial weight behind the retail experience, the hobby has never been more secure.
The days of the mom-and-pop shop might be numbered, but the golden era of the collector is just beginning.
