The Oklahoma Sooners' defense has a chance to be the best defensive unit in college football in 2026. This comes after being a top-10 group last year and returning several key players from that unit. The defensive line is led by EDGEs Taylor Wein, Danny Okoye and Adepoju Adebawore and defensive tackles Jayden Jackson and David Stone. The linebackers are led by Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke. The secondary is led by safeties Peyton Bowen and Michael Boganowski and cornerbacks Courtland Guillory and Eli Bowen. Out of all the standouts returning, former Butkus Award winner Teddy Lehman said that he thinks the secondary unit might be the best on the entire team. "Peyton Bowen looks fantastic," Lehman said on 'The Oklahoma Breakdown with Ikard and Lehman.' "Omarion Robinson back there rotating looks great. Boganowski, like, the secondary looks, and Courtland Guillory and Eli Bowen look fantastic... They are deep, and they are competitive, man. Like, they've got bodies there that compete, fight for balls... of all the things we talk about, you may walk away saying maybe the secondary is the best thing on this football team." What stood out most about Lehman's assessment, though, was his emphasis on the depth and competition within the group. Robinson is among the players pushing for snaps, and having multiple players capable of contributing should allow Oklahoma to keep its secondary fresh throughout a demanding SEC schedule. It also gives Brent Venables more flexibility. The Sooners can rotate defensive backs, match personnel to different opponents and create competition that keeps everyone fighting for playing time. That kind of internal competition can become a major advantage over the course of a season. Oklahoma's defensive line may get most of the attention because of its ability to generate pressure, but the secondary could be the unit that quietly makes everything work. If Lehman's evaluation proves accurate, the Sooners won't just have an elite defense in 2026; they may have a secondary that is the best part of it.
