The time periods and subjects that Dickens and Sheridan are most interested in are wildly different, but even the way they tell their stories is incompatible. Dickens was known for social commentary and moralistic writing, exposing the ills of Victorian era England through sympathetic and ordinary characters. Sheridan is known for sprawling family sagas that prioritize spectacle, action, and tension above all else. Their styles, simply put, don't work together.
Despite all their differences, Sheridan and Dickens are two highly acclaimed writers who reached the peak of fame in their respective times. Though they're set in wildly different eras, Deadwood also has a lot of similiarities with both Yellowstone and Landman. Sheridan's neo-Westerns feature large ensemble casts, the Norris and Dutton families, that are constantly under attack and have complex interpersonal dramas and conflicts. Deadwood, as well, has a huge cast of characters that all have incredibly complicated relationships to one another and are often at one anothers' throats.
While not as obvious, Deadwood also has one major connection to Charles Dickens: its characters. Dickens is responsible for some of the most popular and recognizable characters in the Western canon, like Ebeneezer Scrooge and Oliver Twist. His short stories and novels are filled to the brim with characters who have very distinctive and big personalities verging on archetypes.
Similarly, Deadwood's characters are just as recognizable and borderline exaggerated as Dickens'. Seth Bullock is the lawman with the heart of gold who tries to deny his better nature. Al Swearengen is the loathsome and conniving criminal who always has a trick up his sleeve. Deadwood's characters are almost larger than life in the same way Charles Dickens' characters were, which is just one of many reasons it's considered a timeless Western classic.
