Police in Iredell County, North Carolina, announced on Tuesday, Aug. 18 that they have identified and charged the suspect responsible for burglarizing the home of former NASCAR driver.

Police in Iredell County, North Carolina, announced on Tuesday, Aug. 18 that they have identified and charged the suspect responsible for burglarizing the home of former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, three weeks after Biffle died in a plane crash.

Following a multi-state investigation that lasted eight months, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has charged 44-year-old Terrell Williams of Stone Mountain, Georgia, with multiple felonies, including second-degree burglary, safe-cracking, money laundering, obtaining property by false pretense, possession of burglary tools, larceny of firearms, larceny, and breaking and entering.

Williams is currently being held without bond in Cobb County, Georgia.

Inmate records viewed by USA TODAY Sports show that Williams was arrested by police in Cobb County on July 23 on the charge of first-degree burglary. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has requested Williams’ extradition back to North Carolina, where he will be served with felony warrants related to the Biffle case and pending felony warrants from a separate breaking-and-entering case in 2019.

“This investigation is nowhere near over,” Sheriff Darren Campbell said during a press conference Tuesday, adding that additional charges against Williams are possible. “I do not think this will be the end of this.”

Security camera footage from the incident circulated by local news outlets in North Carolina shows a man that does not resemble Williams. Campbell believes he was not working alone.

When asked if police were still investigating if people within Biffle’s inner circle were involved in some way, Campbell said, “This is a very complex case… I can’t answer your question right now. Are we ruling anything out? Absolutely not.”

Campbell added: “There’s two different segments to this case — the white-collar fraud side which has stretched from California to South Carolina and many other states. We’re still actively working on that, we do have a person of interest, we are actively working with other agencies.”

The white-collar crime Campbell refers to involves search warrant affidavits issued in April where the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said that personal information of Greg Biffle and his wife Cristina were used to change phone numbers, email addresses and passwords to access funds in banking, Venmo and PayPal accounts, then transferred to accounts not connected to the Biffles and used to make multiple purchases.

Detective Charles Davidson of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office wrote at the time that a woman was captured on Biffle’s home security system spending six hours inside the house and leaving with multiple bags. Davidson said at the time he believed the woman and her husband were friends of the Biffle family. No arrests have been made in that case.

Regarding Williams, Campbell said he is known to use several aliases and a Charlotte address, but they have not found that he had a relationship with Biffle or any close relatives.

About three weeks after the Dec. 18, 2025 plane crash that killed Biffle, his wife Cristina, his two children Ryder and Emma, Dennis Dutton, Jack Dutton and Craig Wadsworth, deputies responded to the Biffle residence on Jan. 8 after a burglary was reported. Police said numerous items were stolen, including firearms, NASCAR rings and memorabilia, gold and more than $30,000 in cash.

Deputies chased leads for months as over two dozen search warrants related to this case were issued, Campbell said.

The break in the case came on July 29 when Williams was arrested by police in Cobb County, Georgia, charging him with breaking into the home where a homicide had occurred the week before. According to Action 2 News in Atlanta, Cobb County police arrested Kirk Wrzeisen after his wife was found shot and killed inside their home. Williams, according to an arrest warrant, was caught on camera inside that house.

“This person’s method or the way that he operated from what we’re seeing is basically he used headlines, social media posts, different things to find out when people were or were not home and he executed his plan in that capacity — which is the exact same thing that happened with this high-level homicide in Georgia,” Campbell said. “Williams is accused of targeting unoccupied residences associated with highly publicized homicides and other cases. Our detectives believe that those circumstances and his pattern of conduct could make him relevant to other law enforcement agencies throughout the country.”

Police in Cobb County contacted the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office after apprehending Williams.

After searching Williams’ residence, police found some items that had been stolen from Biffle’s home, including pieces of NASCAR memorabilia from Biffle’s 26-year career in the sport. During the search, police also found a radio frequency detector, which they say Williams used to detect cameras in and outside of Biffle’s home. Police also said that an electronic analysis placed Williams at Biffle’s residence on the day of the burglary and the days leading up to it.

Campbell said detectives determined that, on the day after the burglary, Williams used the cash stolen from Biffle’s residence to buy a car in Georgia. That vehicle has since been seized by police.

According to an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the results of an autopsy previously obtained by USA TODAY, 67-year-old Dennis Dutton was presumed to be piloting the plane when it crashed while trying to return to the Statesville Regional Airport. The Cessna C550 bound for Florida erupted into a large fire when it hit the ground less than a mile from the airport’s runway. Lawyers for the estates of Dennis and Jack Dutton have filed claims against Biffle’s estate seeking $30 million.

Biffle won championships in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and second-tier O’Reilly Auto Parts Series before moving up to the top-level Cup Series where he captured 19 victories. Biffle twice won the Southern 500, one of NASCAR’s crown jewels, twice won the All-Star race, and won four times at Michigan. In all, he won 56 races across the three national touring circuits and was named one of the sport’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023.

Campbell also said that he has been in communication with NASCAR and thanked the organization for their participation in the investigation.
