In addition to the Game of the Week between No. 13 Warren and No. 16 Medina Valley, there are three other matchups from the Express-News Top 20 Power Rankings. Two others involve clashes between state-ranked squads. Here are some of the other key games from San Antonio.
Johnson at Austin Vandegrift, 7 p.m. Friday: No. 1 Johnson (0-0) is eager to get going after a storm ended their season opener against Judson in the middle of the second quarter. The Jaguars, also listed No. 9 in the Class 6A state rankings, will get a good test against No. 23 Vandegrift (1-0) who rallied to defeat Brennan 28-21 in overtime last weekend. Although there wasn't enough time to fully assess the Jaguars, they seem to have found a running back to complement electric playmakers in quarterback Elvis Estrada with receivers Bryson Thompson and Braelyn Allen. Running back Noah Cartwright rushed for 80 yards on seven carries. This is their first meeting. Johnson has won 14 regular season games in a row, and Vandegrift, state champion in 2024, has won 18.
Steele at Humble Atascocita, 6 p.m. Saturday: Third-ranked Steele (1-0) begins a tough two-game stretch facing Atascocita (0-1), which is listed No. 25 in the Class 6A state rankings, and No. 16 Lake Travis next week. The Knights, ranked No. 17 in the state, opened with a 52-21 victory against Reagan last week. Steele's offense rolled after a slow start with junior running back Liam Jones rushing for 154 yards and three touchdown. Senior receiver Jamin Harvell showed off his speed with a 91-yard catch-and-run for a score. Atascocita opened with a 28-17 loss against Katy, ranked tenth in the state. The Eagles struggled moving the ball with 252 total yards. This is their first meeting.
Brennan vs. Reagan, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Farris Stadium: Each team is trying to avoid a 0-2 start. Brennan (0-1), listed No. 5 by the Express-News, slipped just one spot after a tough 28-21 overtime loss against state-ranked Austin Vandegrift. The Bears led by 10 in the fourth quarter before letting it slip away. The bright light is confirmation junior running back Jayshawn Mitchell is the real deal after rushing for 153 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. Mitchell is a rising college football recruit who holds nearly 30 offers, including from Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Texas. No. 12 Reagan (0-1) led Steele twice last week before losing 52-21. The Rattlers struggled moving the ball in the second half and finished with 189 total yards. Reagan will have to ramp that up going against another team full of playmakers. Brennan leads the all-time series 6-4 and has won the last three.
Smithson Valley vs. Sotomayor, 7 p.m. Thursday, Farris Stadium: Smithson Valley (0-0) scored on its first drive of the season – a 19-yard pass from Texas pledge Ty Knutson to Schaeden Davis. An ensuing storm ended the game in the second quarter, leaving coach Larry Hill's three shy of Jim Streety's 343 career wins, the Greater San Antonio record. Smithson Valley is ranked No. 2 by the Express-News and No. 2 in Class 5A Division I. Sotomayor (1-0), ranked No. 19 by the E-N, was impressive in a 17-0 victory against Clark last week. Running backs Isaiah Pena (27-194 yards, 1 TD) and Xavier Victor (22-112 yards,1 TD) combined for most of the Wildcats' 339 total yards.
Somerset at Alamo Heights, 7 p.m. Friday: This matchup features two of the area's most exciting receivers with Somerset junior Malakai Iverson and Alamo Heights senior Landon Balldin. Their quarterbacks, however, are on different development schedules as they showed last week. Iverson, a speedster who has nine offers, had four catches for 107 yards and one touchdown in a 14-8 win against Southside. Senior quarterback Adrian Buentello was an efficient 7 for 8 with 170 yards and one touchdown in his first varsity start for No. 18 Somerset. Balldin, a versatile athlete who also plays lacrosse, caught five passes for 104 yards and a score in last week's 43-14 win against Pieper. Veteran quarterback Easton Stone, passed for 202 yards and four touchdowns for No. 9 Alamo Heights.
