Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham was spotted singing alongside fans at a bar after their latest win.

The Fever picked up a 98-87 win over the Dallas Wings on Saturday, improving their record to 22-12. With 10 games remaining, the Fever are looking to solidify their status as the best team in the East.

Cunningham has been a polarising figure for the WNBA audience with her staunch takes on trans inclusion in the league and was surrounded by loving fans after the game.

Sophie Cunningham sings alongside Fever fans in a bar

Cunningham was spotted at Clayton’s Country Bar in downtown Indianapolis after the win, singing Toby Keith’s ‘Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,’ with a country singer and her fans.

Cunningham played 20 minutes against the Wings, scoring five points on 2-for-5 shooting while grabbing one rebound. Her contributions were limited, but she did end the night as a +3 in her minutes.

The 29-year-old is averaging 8.8 points and 2.2 rebounds this season.

While she has taken a step away from debating the issue of trans athletes in the WNBA as the Fever focus on their upcoming Playoff run, what she started is still wreaking havoc on WNBA discourse.

What did Sophie Cunningham say?

In a feature on ESPN in the third week of July, Cunningham openly stated that she wants to “protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

While this has generated a fair amount of public support for Cunningham, including protests outside certain Fever games, it also made a non-issue into something the WNBA needs to immediately address.

Despite there being no trans women’s basketball player on the radar of any WNBA team, former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White declared for the WNBA Draft to force the league to address its eligibility criteria.

The league has spoken up against the hate and divisiveness that’s tried to destabilise the WNBA, and will define its gender-eligibility criteria with nuance over months of debate that won’t blanket ban all trans athletes from competing.

This all started with Cunningham bringing the long-running trans athletes debate to the forefront in the WNBA with her comments.

Regardless of where one stands on the debate itself, it did steal attention from the incredible on-court season that the WNBA has had so far in 2026.
