Sophie Cunningham jokes she should be next WNBA commissioner

Sophie Cunningham has become one of the most talked about figures in women’s basketball, both on and off the court. The Indiana Fever guard has built a large following through her outspoken personality, and this week she added a new platform to that reach.

Cunningham launched a podcast called alongside trainer Drew Hanlen. The debut episode was released on Thursday. Cunningham touched on a question that has followed the all season, one tied to who will lead the league into its next chapter.

Asked what she would do differently as commissioner, Cunningham did not hold back.

“Honestly, the more I think about it, I think I should be the commissioner,” Cunningham said. “I could get this [expletive] on the right track.”

Her comment comes just days after Current commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced plans to step down at the end of the 2026 season, closing out a seven year run marked by rapid growth in attendance, ratings and media rights value, alongside tension between the league and its players.

Cunningham said her first priority would be practice facilities, noting that some teams still lack proper spaces and are forced to use gyms shared with youth camps. She pointed to the Fever’s own upgrade as proof that change is possible.

“The tides are turning,” Cunningham said. “But I will say there are a lot of owners who are still being very cheap and not giving us professional athletes what we need.”

As the WNBA searches for its next leader, voices like Cunningham’s suggest players want a seat at that conversation, even if her own bid stays mostly in jest.
