India vice-captain KL Rahul retired hurt on 77 off 162 balls after suffering severe cramps at the start of the final session on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium on August 15, 2026. Rahul walked off the field at the beginning of the third session, having batted through humid conditions to register his 21st Test half-century, which was laced with nine boundaries and a six.

Cramps first surfaced in his right forearm during the 51st over, before the tea interval, and Rahul received treatment from the physio on the field at that stage. He was unable to continue once play resumed after tea and left the ground without being dismissed. Under the laws of cricket, a player who retires hurt may return to bat later in the same innings once recovered.

Rahul had anchored India's innings after the early dismissal of opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, who fell for 32. His departure brought Devdutt Padikkal to the crease, and the pair combined for a 150-run partnership before Rahul was forced off. Padikkal went on to complete a century, providing India with a solid platform despite the setbacks at the top of the order.

How did India's batting unfold on day one at Galle?

Jaiswal's dismissal for 32 placed early pressure on the middle order, but Rahul responded with patience and control, building the substantial stand with Padikkal that steadied the innings. Indian captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 16, meaning India lost both their captain and their vice-captain during the course of the day, one to dismissal and the other to retirement hurt. Padikkal's century ensured India remained in a strong position despite those twin setbacks.

Rahul's innings was a composed effort in difficult conditions. The humidity at Galle is well documented as a factor that affects players across long sessions, and the cramping in his right forearm reflected the physical demands of batting deep into the day. No official update on his availability to return to the crease in this innings had been confirmed at the time of writing.

What is the injury and squad context for India ahead of this series?

The touring squad had already absorbed two notable absentees before the first Test began. Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out after failing to fully recover from a left-knee injury, with uncapped Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi called up as his replacement. Sai Sudharsan was also ruled out due to a stress reaction in his right toe, with Sarfaraz Khan named in his place.

Rahul's retirement hurt adds a further fitness concern to the touring party. His status as retired hurt rather than dismissed means team management will monitor his recovery closely before deciding whether he can return to the crease in this innings.
