India captain Shubman Gill faces critical selection decisions ahead of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle starting August 15, 2026. The two-Test tour will see India compete in the World Test Championship 2025-27 as they hold fifth position with four wins, four losses and one draw from nine matches. Gill has been declared fit after missing part of the team's warm-up fixture with a finger injury and will lead India in their campaign to strengthen their WTC standings.

The squad has undergone several changes due to injury concerns. Jasprit Bumrah was initially picked but ruled out due to a left knee injury sustained in the ODI series against England, with Auqib Nabi replacing him. Washington Sundar will miss the first Test, prompting Saransh Jain to join the squad as a replacement. Sarfaraz Khan will link up with the Indian squad in Colombo before the team travels to Galle for the opening Test.

"Gurnoor Brar is excellent with the old ball as he can extract bounce at a good pace. But Prasidh Krishna is bowling well of late as we have seen in the warm-up match. So it's a tough call. Jasprit Bumrah is not here but it's an opportunity for someone to step up. It's all about understanding the pace of the game," Gill said as quoted by NDTV Sports.

Player development and squad confidence

Devdutt Padikkal is expected to slot in at No. 3 in the absence of fellow left-hander Sai Sudharsan, while under-pressure Dhruv Jurel is likely to retain his place in the middle order despite his poor returns in the last few Tests. Having completed a year as Test captain, Gill feels he is growing into the role with every game. This series will be about getting the World Test Championship juggernaut back on track after it came off the rails in recent months.

"Players are going to grow on their own. We need to give time to them, some players require a bit of time. I am comfortable in my role as captain now. Our goal is to stay in contention for a berth in World Test Championship final. We need to win six or seven Tests for that. So we want to make a beginning here," Gill said.
